So what do you think about this lot?
I think:
Ugh! Stones; Delph; Lallana; Townsend Wilshere &, double ugh [-o< [-o< ROONEY!
(NB. Rooney 2 goals. Defoe 15 goals Am I missing something?).
Unless England's Manager is to be given a chance to change his mind, (perhaps as a bribe, aimed at encouraging England to remain a member of the Euro 'family' ), suggest the English FA save money by reducing the final squad to just 20 players.
EUROPEAN 2016 Championship Finals France
I think it will be 2 midfielders and 1 forward who will miss out which,if it happens, will be very unfair on the likes of Rashford as Rooney could be drafted back as a midfielder.
Wilshere, what on earth has he done to be called up ? Delph,Henderson,Lallana all pretty mediocre but Townsend has been one of the shining lights for Newcastle since he signed for them....not that that's saying too much,I guess.
Cahill and Stones included at the back as theres no-one else....whats the alternative ? Joleon Lescott ?
You are missing something with Rooney as he's actually got 14 goals :-" but I think Kane,Sturridge,Vardy and Rashford are a good enough strike force, anyway.
Other than the defence its not a bad starting 11 but if the likes of Alli,Barkley,Kane or Sturridge get injured then theres not too much in reserve.
If England do badly in the tournament it could be the end of Woy..........maybe he'll be replaced by Louis Van Gaal,eh !

In my humble opinion John Stones couldn't even be relied on to defend Masada, let alone a goal Smalling and Cahill are both useless, but are all we appear to have (unless woy was prepared to look outside the prem). The only hope we have got is that most other countries are also struggling at the heart of their defense (even Belgium since VK got injured). One trick pony has had a good spell at the toon, probably because everyone had forgotton that he only knew one trick
Alli is both a breath of fresh air and a disaster waiting to happen (a la Mr Beckham), and Wiltshire Delph and Barkley have played nowhere near enough football to be included (the later having spent plenty of time on the pitch and still managed to play nowhere near enough football. Forget taking Sturridge unless Woy has managed to get hold of some reinforced nailvarnish, as otherwise he will break a nail in the warm up and spend the month sitting in the stands
My starting XI would be Hart (even though not in his best form, nor is Forster), Walker, Cahill, Smalling, Bertrand, Dier, Drinkwater, Alli, Milner, with Rooney (alternating with Alli) playing behind, Kane. Vardy to come on after 70 mins to shake things up if need be. As for the rest, apart from those 13, save money, leave them ALL in UK and send for them if someone gets injured (in which case any possible outside chance they had of doing well will have gone out of the window already :-"

Thank heavens for the football savvy amateur commentators, of the calibre of our own Zid and, (badly missed ) Statto. Good stuff, fellows =D>
Zid, try though I have, I cannot alter my view that Rooney is history so far as international football is concerned. England's 'establishment' Manager,( as with your bosom friend LvG ), hasn't the guts to drop him, and will continue to loudly sing his praises to justify the unjustifiable of both keeping him as captain and, even worse, playing him to the major detriment and, I suspect, the frustration, of the new breed of forward looking youngsters in the squad, praying for their chance.
Not much at issue with your views Statts, other than I would omit Rooney totally or,, at best, sitting on the bench, and look to the choices of either Hennessey or Drinkwater, depending upon the requirements as arising.
Either way Statts, we are certainly in agreement as regards shedding some of the 'excess baggage' , to save unnecessary expenditure.

For England,I am personally delighted that young Rashford has made the squad ! =D> Also pleased that Woy has picked Sturridge who, although injury prone, can be top class on his day.
England have selected 5 forwards but I think a role will be found for Rooney in midfield.
Of those who missed out,Delph was already ruled out by injury and both Drinkwater and Townsend can consider themselves a shade unlucky.
Wilshere seems to have been a promising player for about 6 years and injured for 5 of them and Henderson has been out for a while and never seems to cut it at this level anyway....both he and Wilshere were lucky to make the final squad, imo.
Anyway, there is plenty discuss at the Udon Map Chardonnay awards later this week where it is hoped there will be a live videolink with Jose Mourinho direct from Manchester.

If there is still any space left for sentiment in football, I'm pleased to see Ledley included in the Welsh squad. He missed the Cup Final with leg injury, but reportedly should be fit to play some part for Wales.
Can't resist another Cup Final link- see Smalling in For England- included for his ability to wrestle quick players to the ground when exposed?

Actually, the Awards are now scheduled as a private function, for only the elite of the "UM Association Football Writers Club" . This step was taken, in the interests of Public Safety, following the announcement, on another thread, by the world's leading intellectual, that this Forum's members are largely a bunch of idiots, unable to read, let alone comprehend, written English . It was feared that, if a public event, aforesaid intellectual might attend, be recognized, and become the recipient of an unscheduled award, appropriate to his contributions towards the spreading of harmony & goodwill among us members!!Zidane wrote:For England,I am personally delighted that young Rashford has made the squad ! =D> Also pleased that Woy has picked Sturridge who, although injury prone, can be top class on his day.

But fear not, it is hoped Zidine will remain sufficiently 'copus mentis' to write a full report upon the highlights of the football topics discussed; which I am sure all members WILL be able to read, AND comprehend. :-"

EUROPEAN 2016 Championship Finals France
Mixed kick off times for the Home Countries....
England play Wales at 8pm Thai but the other two England matches are at 2am in the morning over here.Wales also play Slovakia at 11pm Thai.
All Northern Irelands games kick off at 11pm in Thailand.
The Republic of Ireland play Belgium at 8pm and Sweden at 11pm over here.
The remaining group games for Wales and the ROI are at 2am.
Certainly England v Wales and the Republic of Ireland v Belgium are at decent watching times.
Meanwhile for any English fans wanting to dress up as Crusaders in Nutty Park or Soi Sampan be careful..... The BBC has warned English football fans not to dress as crusaders when attending the Euro 2016 tournament this summer as they might cause offence to Muslims.
The advice comes via their ‘iWonder’ website, aimed at a younger audience, which asks such pressing questions as “Was Shakespeare a feminist?” and “How green is my commute?”
Posing the question: “Is it wrong to dress as a crusader for an England match?” the answer appears to be a resounding “yes”.
“Crusaders were the perpetrators of violent attacks across Europe and the Middle East on Muslims, Jews and pagans,” the website intones, suggesting that fans may simply want to don the English flag instead, as “this has nothing to do with crusaders or what they stood for”.
And although it can’t help musing: “The English flag used to have connotations with far-right nationalism,” it is forced to concede that: “Today the flag is flown by local authorities and individuals in a purely patriotic sense.”

Sadly it's gone T*TS up already last night as violence erupted between England fans and locals in Marseille before a ball has even been kicked in the competition. Riot Police and undercover officers with stun guns were deployed. Scores of people injured, more than 100 arrested or deported and some England fans later jailed. Some 70,000 England fans – many without tickets – are expected to be in city over the weekend. Many without tickets? I would suggest the majority of that number will be without tickets. Hopefully tomorrow's game against Russia will be without incident but with their hard core nutters I doubt it.

I want England to put on some decent displays and play to their strengths which is Kane and either Sturridge or Vardy upfront with Dele Alli playing in the no.10 role just behind the two strikers.
If it means Rooney has to play in midfield or is dropped altogether, then so be it.
I just hope England don't scrape through in 3rd place in the group then are eliminated on penalties in the last 16 after a dour 0-0 draw.
But good luck to all the Home Countries in the competition.....great to see Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and Wales in there.
For the eventual winners, hard to look beyond Germany,France and, possibly,Spain imo.

Just when I thought our chance had passed, you go and save the best for last.

A tad too much to expect, winning at Rugby, Soccer, AND Cricket all on the same weekend! Up to Mr Hamilton in Canada now. As you can see clutching at straws let alone threads?
