I'm also in Pattaya at the moment.
My observations from my previous visit is that there are many more Russians in town than before. You tend to notice them more because of there loudness. I hope they don't make Udon their next port of call.
I've never experienced any violence in the town. Maybe it's because I'm tucked up in bed by 12.

update from pattaya city news.
Further developments in the Russian Double Murder case.
We continue to closely follow the recent murder of two Russian Tourists on Jomtien Beach over the weekend and our journalists are stationed at a Command Center which has been set up at the Anantaya Resort in Soi 18, off Jomtien Beach, just meters away from the scene of the crime. This major murder investigation now includes Police Officers from various Police Divisions, local Government Officials, Tourism Authority of Thailand Officials and Russian Embassy personnel are also assisting in the investigation. We will now attempt to clarify the current position with regards to this investigation and give you the facts. We will also attempt to clarify inconsistent reporting of the case in the international media.
We begin with the two victims, Miss Tatiana Tsimfer aged 30 and Miss Liubov Svirkova aged 25. Police Lieutenant General Asawin, the Region 2 Commander of Police who is in charge of the investigation has received considerable assistance from the Russian Embassy in Bangkok who has assigned Mr. Vladimia Viprovin, the Russian Consul in Pattaya as their representative at the Command Center. He has provided Police with a full profile of each victim as the search for possible motives for the killings continues. Mr. Viprovin has confirmed that the pair came from affluent families in Russia and both were in employment. Any suggestions that they were involved in prostitution here in Thailand have been discounted. Furthermore he confirmed that they entered Thailand on a Charter Flight which flew into Utapao Airport on 16th February. Flight number SBI 849 consisted of 201 passengers and 12 cabin crew. Police are now tracking down each passenger and cabin crew and they will be questioned individually. Police are also searching for an unlicensed Tour Guide who the pair was believed to have employed to take them to various local Tourist attractions during their stay here in Pattaya. This man disappeared after the shooting and has not been seen by other members of the Russian tour group that accompanied the victims.
Further inspections of the CCTV pictures have taken place as Police try and build a profile of the suspected shooter. They have brought in Khun Somart, a self-proclaimed motorbike expert who was asked to identify the model and color of the motorbike used by the suspect. After intense examination of the footage he cannot be certain but believes the bike used was a red Honda Wave, but Khun Somart is now waiting for a colleague to come and verify his findings. On Tuesday afternoon at Pattaya City Hall, Police Colonel Sutin and Khun Ronagit, Deputy Mayor of Pattaya, called a meeting of every motorbike taxi driver in the Pattaya area as he begins a city-wide inspection of motorbikes. They also urged motorbike taxi drivers to assist in the investigation any way they can. The Colonel is aware that Russian single women who come to Pattaya will often use motorbike taxis. They would like the drivers to question their customers whenever they can as they may have either known the victims or might be able to offer clues as to the identity of the shooter.
Despite the efforts of the authorities so far, the identity of the shooter is still not known but Police believe he was a tall man, around 180cms in height and of Thai origin, however they have not discounted the theory that the man may be of foreign origin.
As we compiled this report and despite one of the most intense murder investigations ever seen here in Pattaya, the fact remains that no arrests have been made in this case. Pressure from senior Police and government officials is intense as they look to close this case as quickly as possible to prevent further damage to the already fragile Tourism Industry here in Thailand. Dr. Suwit, the Minister for Sports and Tourism has called on the Tourist Police to arrest the shooter, and Police Major General Panya, the National Commander of Tourist Police is now in Pattaya and has joined the investigation. It has been reported in the National Press that Police General Seripisut, the Acting National Police Chief, believes that foreign gangs may be involved in this double-murder and unless the killer is caught and foreign gang activity in Pattaya stops, Pattaya Police Officers will be disciplined and possibly reassigned. Khun Chaiwat from the Tourism Authority of Thailand has told the investigating team that unless this case is brought to a swift conclusion, Tourism will be affected.
So now we wait, but for now, the harsh reality of this case is that the shooter remains at large. We have journalists stationed 24 hours a day at the Command Center and we will bring you any further news as soon as we receive it.

Man 'confesses' to shooting Russians
Police last night arrested a man who they said was the gunman that shot dead two Russian women on a beach near Pattaya last Saturday.
Anuchit Lamlert, an unemployed man with a long criminal record, allegedly confessed to shooting dead Tatiana Tsimfer, 30, and Liubov Svirkova, 25, while they sat drinking in deckchairs on Jomtien Beach.
But, chief investigator Pol Lt General Assawin Khwanmueng, said he did not believe the victims were killed solely for their valuables - as reportedly claimed.
A police source said investigators were also looking into a potential lead that a Thai women hired Anuchit to kill both women because one of them had a fling with her Russian husband, who owns a tourism business in Pattaya, shortly after they visited his office.
"The Thai wife was worried that her husband might get attracted to the Russian woman and later leave her for the younger girl, so she [may have] decided to whack her potential rival," the source said.
Police are still looking for the murder weapon, a Chinese-made Norinco pistol, which Anuchit said he threw into a shrub-covered plot after shooting both victims.
Civil defence volunteers were mobilised to look for the handgun at press time last night, armed with high-powered spotlights.
Police apprehended Anuchit in a rented room in Sri Racha district, and later found his motorcycle - a red Honda Wave - the same model seen in the blurry video footage from security cameras near the murder site, at a different location in Bang Lamung district.
Police records show that Anuchit had frequently snatched gold necklaces and valuables from foreign tourists in the Pattaya area.

Arrest for Pattaya murders
March 2, 2007 - 6:00PM
An unemployed Thai out on bail awaiting trial for robbery has been arrested for the murder of two Russian women as they sat on the beach at the Thai resort of Pattaya to watch the sun rise, police said on Friday.
Anuchit Lumlert, 24, confessed to pumping bullets into Tatiana Tsimfer, 30, and Liubov Svirkova, 25, as they sat in deckchairs drinking, eastern region police chief Lieutenant General Aswin Kwanmuang said.
"He said he wanted to rob them, but had to kill them because one of the two victims saw his face," Aswin, who led the investigation in a city notorious as an international criminals' haven 90 miles (150 km) from Bangkok, told Reuters by telephone.
Other investigators said Anuchit was suspected of 10 robberies in the Pattaya area and killed the Russian women when high on drugs because they screamed.
"He is a crook with a multiple criminal record," provincial police chief Major General Anan Charoenchasri said.
Anuchit was freed on bail in January to await trial on charges of robbing a South Korean tourist and Aswin said investigators were not wholly convinced by his murder confession.
"We didn't believe him because he didn't take their mobile phones with him as he claimed he was drunk, and we suspect he might have been hired to do the job," Aswin said.
The suspected killer was caught in blurry pictures on a hotel security camera arriving on a motorcycle, walking through a garden to the beach, then later walking back to it.
He also left the womens' wallets behind.
Police brought in experts to identify the motorcycle model, which helped track down Anuchit. Witnesses at the beach also confirmed his picture.
Forensic tests on the pistol, found hidden in a dumpster by a friend who bought it from Anuchit, matched the shell casings left at the scene, police said.
There has been no official word on why a gunman would be hired to kill the two women, but there has been considerable speculation about inter-gang rivalry in Pattaya, where prostitutes from former Soviet states are common. Reuters

Suspect insists murder of Russian female tourists in Thailand was robbery gone awry
The Associated PressPublished: March 4, 2007
PATTAYA, Thailand: A man arrested for the murders of two female Russian tourists in Thailand insisted that he was not a part of any crime syndicate following a reenactment of the crime on Sunday morning.
"I was robbing them and there is no one else involved," said Anuchit Lamlert who was arrested Thursday and has confessed to the murders of Tatiana Tsimfer, 30, and Liubov Svirkova, 25.
The victims' bodies were found Feb. 24 shot and slumped in lounge chairs on a beach in Chonburi province's Pattaya, about 110 kilometers (70 miles) southeast of Bangkok.
Sunday morning's public reenactment of the crime followed standard Thai police procedure, and was covered by most Thai television stations. The brutal killings shocked Thailand and have been dominating news headlines for the past week, as well as being the subject of intense interest in Russia.
Anuchit told police the motive for the killings was robbery and that he killed the pair because he was "afraid they would remember (his) face" after they saw him and started crying out for help.
However, police believe he may be lying.
"There are inconsistencies in his confession and the evidence," National Police Chief Gen. Seriphisut Temiyawej said during a visit to Pattaya Saturday to interrogate the suspect on Saturday. "I believe the murder may be linked to a crime organization and there may be other people behind it."
Local police, however, said they regard robbery as the most likely motive.

WRONG, WRONG, WRONG
Why does the Thai Justice system allow this.
How is it possible that a guy who shot somebody is out on bail?????
This guy had no guilty feeling at all and he thought that he could get away with his crimes. Impunity????
If you can shoot somebody and simply go out on bail, then there is something very wrong with the justice system.
I think that National Police Chief Gen. Seriphisut Temiyawej should
check this first before he starts to shout some Nationalistic slogans!!!!!
Better he stops right now with all these big "MEDIA-SHOWS".

Police sceptical on murder motive
Chonburi police are refusing to believe that robbery was the motive behind the recent dawn murder of two Russian women and they have reopened their investigation.
General Itthiphol Piriyapinyo, deputy commander of the province's police, expressed scepticism over Anuchit Lamlert's confession.
Anuchit was being held in custody and continued to insist he murdered the tourists after an attempted robbery went wrong.
"It could be seen from the re-enactment that he was skilled with a firearm. He shot like a gunman, without touching the victims' belongings. It contradicted his confession," Itthiphol said.
"So we will re-start the investigation from when the two Russian women arrived at Utapao International Airport, checked in at a hotel and spent eight days in the Pattaya area."
Tatiana Tsimfer, 30, and Liubov Svirkova, 25, arrived in Thailand with a Russian tour party on February 16 and were shot dead by a Thai man at dawn as they sat in deckchairs on a Jomtien beach on February 24.
He said either woman could have had personal or business disputes in Russia, which could relate to international crime.
Officers said both victims' mobile phones showed they had called Russians in the area and in their motherland during their time in the Kingdom. Officers will investigate the victims' relationship with several Russian men in Pattaya.
"We have too little information about the victims so we must wait for more details from the Russian Embassy about whether they had any known disputes," Itthiphol said.
This is what I call a good police job.
Keep the good work up guys.
We tend to complain a lot, but when they do a good job, we have to mention it also:

One always has to wonder about the guilt of those interrogated by the Thai police because there are so many reports of torture and coersion reported!I am always amazed how often the defendents seem to confess and cooperate with a restaging of the crime!Makes me think due process is seriously lacking!
