EU in or out? Brexit: The Movie

Post by GT93 » June 14, 2016, 1:16 pm

Well well it looks like an exit is seriously on the cards. I understand a significant number of voters may make up their mind in the last week so it's not easy to pick the result.

The scare campaign from the establishment seems to be booted up a level every passing day. Soon they'll be saying half the UK will be living in caves within 6 months of a Brexit vote. And the old Etonian might only be PM for another fortnight at most? He'd become the Baldrick of British PMs in the history books.

EU in or out? Brexit: The Movie

Post by BobHelm » June 15, 2016, 10:14 pm

A good friend of mine came up with a great idea. If you don't have the time/inclination to find out all the facts about the EU referendum (I don't blame you) and are possibly unsure which way to vote, perhaps knowing how other notable people are thinking could help out.

Here are a few that strongly believe the UK should remain a member of the EU:

• Governor of the Bank of England
• International Monetary Fund
• Institute for Fiscal Studies
• Confederation of British Industry
• Leaders/heads of state of every single other member of the EU
• President of the United States of America
• Eight former US Treasury Secretaries
• President of China
• Prime Minister of India
• Prime Minister of Canada
• Prime Minister of Australia
• Prime Minister of Japan
• Prime Minister of New Zealand
• The chief executives of most of the top 100 companies in the UK including Marks and Spencer, BT, Asda, Vodafone, Virgin, IBM, BMW etc.
• Kofi Annan, the former Secretary General of the United Nations
• All living former Prime Ministers of the UK (from both parties)
• Virtually all reputable and recognised economists
• The Prime Minister of the UK
• The leader of the Labour Party
• The Leader of the Liberal Democrats
• The Leader of the Green Party
• The Leader of the Scottish National Party
• The leader of Plaid Cymru
• Leader of Sinn Fein
• Martin Lewis, that money saving dude off the telly
• The Secretary General of the TUC
• Unison
• National Union of Students
• National Union of Farmers
• Stephen Hawking
• Chief Executive of the NHS
• 300 of the most prominent international historians
• Director of Europol
• David Anderson QC, Independent Reviewer of Terrorism Legislation
• Former Directors of GCHQ
• Secretary General of Nato
• Church of England
• Church in Scotland
• Church in Wales
• Friends of the Earth
• Greenpeace
• Director General of the World Trade Organisation
• WWF
• World Bank
• OECD

Here are pretty much the only notable people who think we should leave the EU:

• Boris Johnson, who probably doesn’t really care either way, but knows he’ll become Prime Minister if the country votes to leave
• A former Secretary of State for Work and Pensions who carried out a brutal regime of cuts to benefits and essential support for the poorest in society as well as the disabled and sick
• That idiot that was Education Secretary and every single teacher in the country hated with a furious passion for the damage he was doing to the education system
• Leader of UKIP
• BNP
• Britain First
• Donald Trump
• Keith Chegwin
• David Icke

So, as I said, if you can’t be bothered to look into the real facts and implications of all this in/out stuff, just pick the list that you most trust and vote that way. It really couldn’t be more simple.

And if you are unsure about leaving, don't.

EU in or out? Brexit: The Movie

I think that there are 2 main areas of argument.
1. Economic.
Here I think that the case is overwhelming for the stay in camp. The get out have offered no case that the economic conditions could possibly improve by exiting. indeed logic says that exiting can only make it economically worse for Britain. How worse, is open to argument, but worse it will be,
2.Social.
here the get out campaign have better arguments. Having unemployed Europeans in Britain is clearly unwelcome. Just how big a number that is I do not know though. Exiting & removing European workers would have serious repercussions for some Industries & firms that are reliant on filling low wage jobs that no Briton will do. Farming especially, but the Health Industry also.
Plus exiting would not release Britain from its' International responsibilities on refuges. Hence people from outside the EU would still come in with the same numbers from the world's trouble-spots.

It also concerns me that the high profile exit pushers are all what I would class as 'Little Englanders'. People who want Britain to return to some bygone age of greatness. The world has moved on & there is no return & the theory is no better than wishful thinking.

So yes, on balance, I think that Britain should remain.
However I have no intention of voting on the matter.
Firstly because I have no intention of ever returning to live in Britain, so the decision is of academic interest only. Secondly because I believe that the decision is up to the generation that are going to have to live with the consequences - either way...

While it is not of much interest on a personal level I do have a concern. If the UK was to vote for exiting from the EU then when it came to matters where the clout of a large international entity (e.g. EU/USA) to put pressure on countries that don't comply with accepted international standards, such as Thailand with its human trafficking in the fishing industry, then would those countries listen to a strong EU and would they probably ignore a single country i.e the UK?

That has, in practice, been the case since Britain joined the ommon Market all those years ago.
Everything, at the end of the day, is done by negotiation - as are agreements between most countries unless war is undertaken instead..
Mind blowing, isn't it?? :D

Hi Galee,

I really shouldn't comment as I am not from the UK, but I have to say but there are a lot on that list that I wouldn't "Piss On " even if they were on fire, starting with the,

Prime Minister of Australia
Secretary General of Nato
Greenpeace
Director General of the World Trade Organisation
Almost All Political Leaders, Church Leaders, Any Bank CEO, Anyone from the IMF, etc

Watching from the sidelines, (as a bystander), if I was a betting man, my money would be on the likelihood that the " UK will Vote to Leave the EU". That is of course if one can believe what one reads or sees in the Media

That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.

Lets make Britain GREAT again ... leave and become a self sustaining single nation once more .. things might be tough for a while but for the future and generations including my daughter and grand son thereafter this is possibly the only chance ever to rid Britain of the shackles all that is the EU brings ......INCLUDING IMMIGRATION lets control our own borders again ...the ones so many lost their lives for in the WW I an II ..

Only my op ......im sure many will disagree .

Pipoz, add these two from Bobs list as being dubious characters that you wouldn't touch with a barge pole.

The leader of the SNP. The poisonous dwarf, Nicola Sturgeon. She will do or say anything to get independence for Scotland. Trouble she can't make up her mind, independence from who?. The UK? She's not going to get it from backing the EU.
The leader of Sinn Fein. Gerry Adams. He is interested in only one thing. A united Ireland. Who in their right mind would endorse his credentials with his history.

My sentiments exactly Jon. I have family back in the UK who back BREXIT 100%. I'm not going to turn my back on them and tell them it doesn't affect me. It will affect me, probably in an adverse way, but I agree with them, I'm supporting them and that's why I've taken the trouble to vote.

Here's another dodgy one on Bobs list. No2. The IMF.

Christine Leagarde, the IMF managing director is facing trial over a 290 million pound payment to businessman Bernard Tapie.
Would you trust your money with the IMF after the way they have dealt with the Greece problem?

& yet that is the same IMF that an exited Britain will have to go cap in hand to the next time it needs a loan. :D

To be honest Galee you would have done your family a far greater favour if you would have convinced them of the economic suicide of voting Exit!!

Two sentences that focus on the Holy Grail of Remainers thought's. Money. Never mind all the other factors that are important in this referendum.
Strange logic that you think I should try to persuade someone of something that I don't believe myself. Is that something you would do? [-X
