Sorry to put a "dampner" on your New Year celebrations Brian

"BENTEKE STAYING PUT?

Christian Benteke is set to reject the advances of Chinese Super League club Beijing Guoan to remain at Crystal Palace in January, according to the Daily Mail.

The Sun claim Benteke could follow in Oscar and Carlos Tevez’s footsteps by making the switch to China, with the Belgium international the subject of a £40m bid.

However, the Mail understand the 26-year-old has settled in London after him summer move to Selhurst Park and is keen to push on under Sam Allardyce’s tutelage.

Benteke has scored eight goals for Palace since his £27m transfer from Liverpool."

I'm sure Sam would have preferred the 40 mill to spend in the window .........

0500 hrs. I've just watched Palace v Swansea. Fell out of bed at 0230. Honestly, you couldn't write this stuff!
Can't particularly blame Benteke for a mysterious, awful 1st half from Palace. But, he's not looking anything like a star player, or earning the very considerable salary he's on. He went off H/T with apparently a shoulder injury. Improved Palace 2nd half (it couldn't have got any worse), partly down to Benteke's replacement Campbell, who showed far more effort and movement than Benteke.

I often feel that football managers get the sack in an attempt to divert attention away from the inadequacies of their bosses!! That is almost certainly the case with this sacking.
Mike Phelan: Hull City sack head coach after less than three months in permanent role
http://www.bbc.com/sport/football/38503364

Steve Bruce walked away from the side after gaining promotion because the owners refused to spend any funds on strengthening the side. The owners then took the cheapest possible option of installing his assistant, Mike Phelan, as (eventually) the boss & still spent no money.
The club are bottom of the Premiership because they do not have Premiership quality players.
Changing the manager will do nothing to improve that.

Entirely agree with your comments about Mike Phelan,Bob.He was on a loser to start with and the problems Hull have are down entirely to the owners and not him.
Even though they are bottom of the league they are in the semi finals of the League Cup.I cant see there being a queue of top class managers wanting to take on the job.You would think that Hull would have to spend around 50m GBP on about 6 players to have any chance of avoiding the drop and that just isn't going to happen.

Swansea may well have made a good appointment in the highly rated coach,Paul Clement. He was harshly dismissed by Derby last season with the club lying 7th in the Championship but going through a dodgy spell for a few games.
A good win at Palace which is a worry for Sam Allardyce and Brian Davis.

Comfortable win for Stoke over Watford whose recent displays will be giving hope to the current bottom 3 teams.

As for Arsenal......3-0 down with 20 minutes to go and grab a 3-3 draw but they were atrocious for the first 70 minutes and would surely have won if they had started to show a bit of effort from the kick off.Incidentally,Arsenal is getting a reputation for hi-so youngsters on the books.First there was Oxlade-Chamberlain and last night they had Reine-Adelaide and Maitland-Niles on the bench ! The days of Alan Smith long gone !

Our friend Khun Guardiola.....City started like a house on fire and winning their first 6 games in style. But then Pep started tinkering with the system such as bringing in Ronnie Corbett in goal and playing Kolarov as a centre half.Silva and de Bruyne are two of the best midfielders in the Premiership but have been distinctly average in recent weeks.Even Aguero wasn't at his best just before and after his suspension.Zabaleta has been an inspirational figure in defence over the years but has largely been ignored this season.I think Guardiola under estimated the style of play in the Premiership and is struggling to adapt. What worked in La Liga wont necessarily work in the EPL.

Don't forget its the Spuds v Chelski at 3am Thursday morning Thai.I'm predicting Chelseas 13 game winning run will come to an end and the match will finish 2-2.
Just when I thought our chance had passed, you go and save the best for last.

Rudy Gestede: Middlesbrough sign Aston Villa striker
http://www.bbc.com/sport/football/38492332

Well they are desperately in need of someone to support Negredo & there is, obviously, no faith in Rhodes. Not sure that Gestede has shown enough in the past to prove he will score too many, but I wish him well...

[quote="Zidane"]As for Arsenal......3-0 down with 20 minutes to go and grab a 3-3 draw.
And but for the sending of, would have confirmed the fears I expressed, and yet again stumbled to a defeat against inferior opponents. This seemingly inevitable, second half of the season, meltdown by Arsenal, must encourage both Guardiola & Mourinho to believe, the fourth spot is there for the taking, if only one or other of them could develop some interpersonal skills with their players. :-"

Our friend Khun Guardiola.....Happy to read you agree with me Zid!

And I'm going one further by praying [-o< , ( :-s well he has been kind to me lately!), Spurs will win. I believe the team has the players , and the style of play to do so; although I do worry that, like neighbours Arsenal, they sometimes 'roll over' when the going get tough.

Arsenal showing they REALLY mean business in this transfer window ........ from Sky

Arsenal will complete the signing of Hednesford defender Cohen Bramall in the next 48 hours, according to Sky sources.

The left-back impressed during a short trial at London Colney before Christmas and has been training with the club since then.

Bramall has passed a medical examination and will join on a two-and-a-half-year contract.

Tottenham Hotspur 2 Chelsea 0
A superb performance by the Spurs ! Two headed goals by Dele Ali,from Christian Eriksen crosses, either side of half time won it for them. He's scored 7 goals in 3 games over the Festive period.Chelsea,a bit off colour, were well beaten, only really threatened with a couple of half chances for Hazard......opens up the title race,a little bit, anyway.

[quote="Zidane"]Tottenham Hotspur 2 Chelsea 0. A superb performance by the Spurs !....Chelsea,a bit off colour, were well beaten....

One man's opinion.
A full stadium; both teams at full strength and Hazard, of all people, missing a clear chance to score within the first three minutes. For virtually the remainder of the first half, the game was even, with Chelsea looking superior in attack, yet never really threatening to overcome a superbly organized Spurs defence; which was proving particularly adept at closing down, and frustrating, Hazard & DeCosta, immediately either of them gained possession.
Just on half time, Walker won the ball in midfield, sent a pinpoint pass to Eriksen on the right, who sent a beautifully measured cross into Chelsea's goalmouth, from where the currently unstoppable Dele headed into the top corner of the net. A Spurs trademark quickly executed counterattack, which I would have expected to have figured hugely in Chelsea's pre-match planning! [-X
Not unexpected the first fifteen minutes of the second half saw Chelsea throw everything into their attack , and looked certain to score. Indeed they had two wonderful opportunities in quick succession, one a quite incredible miss by Pedro, standing virtually on the goal line by Spur's goalpost, and somehow contriving to head the ball the wrong side of the post. Gradually thereafter Spurs assumed control of both the midfield, ( where Rose & Walker were completely dominant), and the match, with a repeat of the Walker, Eriksen & Dele first half goal delivering the final coup de tat to a, by that stage, thoroughly frustrated , well beaten, Chelsea team.
Sorry Zid, but to suggest, however subtly, that the Chelsea team being "a bit off colour" contributed in even the slightest degree to this defeat is totally unjustified. :-" The Chelsea team came into the game with a full strength squad, on a 13 win run of games; at the top of their form; going for a record, and full of confidence & determination. The Spurs players won this game solely for the reason that they were the better team.

Mat wrote"I am anticipating some highly surprising, even shock, transfers out of the EPL to the "J" league, maybe in January, but certainly at season's end, given the obscene amounts of money being thrown around by the latter".

Not from PL but I assume this is the type of obscene amounts of money you refer to .....

AUBAMEYANG TO CHINA FOR £128m?

Shanghai SIPG have lodged a world-record £128m bid for Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

SIPG already have Brazilian duo Oscar and Hulk and they are keen to spend big in this window.

Sky Sports News HQ understands it would be very difficult for SIPG to buy Aubameyang this month.

Dortmund, meanwhile, have staunchly denied a bid has even been made, stating they would not comment on "hypothetical matters".

Marco Silva: Hull City appoint ex-Sporting & Olympiakos boss
http://www.bbc.com/sport/football/38516401

He is young (39) & has a fair pedigree in Portugal (gained promotion for Estoril to their top flight & Sporting Lisbon won the Portuguese Cup ) & in Greece (won a record 17 consecutive domestic matches with Olympiakos & beat The Gunners 3 to 2 in the Champions' League).
He has no experience of the English game though &, probably equally worrying, has only signed with Hull until the season end.. !!

He's done pretty well at the 3 clubs he has managed,so far......Estoril,Sporting Lisbon and Olympiakos.

To most people Hull look doomed already and I don't think relegation would harm his reputation much.On the other hand,if he were to achieve a miracle and keep the Tigers up,maybe some of the bigger clubs in Europe would come a callin'............just sayin' :-k

Zid if managing Estoril, Sporting Lisbon & Olympiakos (8th or 9th best leagues in Europe if you discount any nations 2nd and 3rd level leagues :-" )is supposed to be a good CV then Hull would have had just as good a chance by employing the manager of Dundalk whos team have been playing sides of similar standard in CL and doing quite well.
Silva has managed "Big Fish" in very very poor leagues ...... one can only assume that there were no applicants from any of the managers in EFL 1 or 2 who must all be waiting for a chinese 2nd 3rd 4th or 5th league team to offer a multi million pound deal for their services \:D/
