Current best internet and TV options in the city
Current best internet and TV options in the city
Ahead of relocating just seeking some opinions and advice on internet and satellite services. Six years ago, just off the east ring road, we had 3BB with a dedicated wire to the house that speed-wise was more than adequate. Before that it was piggybacked on the nonsense ToT land line that we eventually got rid of. I have 3BB here in Pattaya, paying around 700 baht/month and it's been all that we needed.
Does 3BB have any promotions on right now? We aren't into SMART televisions and the like so don't need all the bells and whistles. The 3BB wire is still in the master bedroom. I read on other forums about how dire TRUE is regards package changes, channel drops and service so possibly same in Udon? Also I am not a big torrent or downloader but like to stream my ThaiExpatTV service when I feel like a catch up.
We had TRUE satellite when we last lived in Udon but I didn't care much for it. The house does have some local satellite service at the moment (large black mesh dish) which keeps the family happy. I am not a great television watcher and there are the 'bundled' services these days; notably TRUE but just checking to see what else the Udon exiles use. I am aware of the droid boxes; my mate had one in his condo and another in his restaurant down here and swears by them. Right now, he's swearing at the England 8-ball implosion!... but I digress.
Another mate of mine down here has signed up for one of TRUE's bundled services and was able to get the account in his name by signing a 1-year contract but still paying monthly by using his new pink ID card. Another mate (yes, I have a few left!) has a 1 year contract with 3BB in his name but to get that he needed to sign up for a year and pay it in advance. What's the experience with local service providers in Udon when it comes to getting your own bill?
Thanks!

We had AIS wifi internet for some time but we have changed a month ago to 3BB. Plenty of mega/gyga and whatever else is needed. I think 799 a month. They came around the local houses and required 3 people to sign up before the service was established. Then they ran the fiber cable and the wire into our house. All good and no dropouts.

We run 2 x 3BB at the shop @ 1200 down and 50 up. (1,300 month per). Cancelling my independent true at 15 down and 3 up.. because of reliability and speed issues. (745 pcm). Adding a 3rd 3BB at previous. House has 25 down 3up with 3BB at 630 baht per month. For us in work and leisure 3BB has totally won after 3 years of different supplies. CAT was the worse.

Re: Current best internet and TV options in the city
We have 3BB, beats True hands down in this area.
The forest was shrinking daily but the trees kept voting for the axe as its handle was made of wood and they thought it was one of them.
Re: Current best internet and TV options in the city
It's really down to the area mate as to which vendor got it right. Some lines and boxes they run to are done well, all the way to your end point, and have good routers / modems too.
So it's not the brand per say but the sum of the overall network quality and hardware connectivity in your target location.
Certain of your neighbors could comment on which vendor they get best performance and price from.
3BB fiber is a solid bet if it's in your area.

Does anyone here use a Slingbox connected to the U.S.? How's it working? Is the internet here robust enough to handle it?
Re: Current best internet and TV options in the city
Slingbox has been a good one for years running, I have seen a few bars run the Super Bowl etc on it during huge get-togethers and it always did the job.Udon Map wrote:Does anyone here use a Slingbox connected to the U.S.? How's it working? Is the internet here robust enough to handle it?

Re: Current best internet and TV options in the city
My slingbox (albeit from the UK) gives a far superior product than anything else that I have come across. The facility to record and view, use catch up TV etc etc means you can view pretty much any current tv whenever and wherever). The signal that I have in rural Kumphawapi gives a perfect picture with no buffering and I am able to sit in airports/Starbucks or wherever and watch yesterdays football!Udon Map wrote:Does anyone here use a Slingbox connected to the U.S.? The only drawback has been the occasions when the box itself has needed rebooting. Recently this has happened maybe once every 3 months or so but my box is about 10 years old now and needs replacing. As long as you have someone on hand in the country where the box is to perform the reboot then disruption is minimal

Bumping this one to ask if anyone has their home internet service account in their own, foreign name rather than in the name of their Thai spouse or partner? If so, what company and was there any special conditions such as signing a 1-year contract and paying month by month or paying for 12 months up front.
Thanks!

Re: Current best internet and TV options in the city
While visiting last week, I asked at 3BB's shop at Big C if I could have an account in my name and they said no problem. I didn't have time to sit down and ask about services so just had a look at their website.
Has anyone taken advantage of their latest promo for VDSL with either 30/5 Mbps for 590 baht or 50/10 Mbps for 700 baht? Just checking if VDSL is available in Udon.
The other option is their fiber connection with 100/30 Mbps for 900 baht and 200/50 Mbps for 1200 baht. Anyone here taken up their fiber services lately?
Their website advises one to check if a service is available before signing up... but doesn't detail where there are any gaps in availability.

We run 2 x 1,200 baht service at the IC. Beware needing to place 3,000 baht per router for guarantee and 1 year contract.

Re: Current best internet and TV options in the city
I have been using their 50/10 Mbps for 700 baht/Month out in the village for about 4 months and I am very pleased. Their response when we have an outage is good in consideration that we live out in a small country village. One call to their Customer service at 1530 is all that it takes and they always make a follow up phone call up to make sure that you are back on line. The maximum time that we were down was about a little less than 12 hours when during the night a Sugar Cane truck knocked down several lines in the village. I have been streaming video YouTube on a Smart TV and with KODI on an Android TV Box with good results.tamada wrote:While visiting last week, I asked at 3BB's shop at Big C if I could have an account in my name and they said no problem. Re: Current best internet and TV options in the city
Thanks for that. I used to have whatever was their most popular ADSL home service the last time I lived up there about 6 years ago. Was about 900 baht a month if I am not mistaken. Their service was good and any outages only seemed to follow from heavy downpours in the rainy season and were short-lived. The wire is still at the house so it may be an easy hookup unless I want to switch to fiber. However, the fiber is only run to the nearest 'box' so that may already have been enabled for other subscribers.pf-flyer wrote:I have been using their 50/10 Mbps for 700 baht/Month out in the village for about 4 months and I am very pleased. Re: Current best internet and TV options in the city
We had 3BB when we lived in Pattaya, and transferred it up to Udon. When working, it was brilliant, but for our area around the airport, the repair quality was crap. Now we're on TOT fiber. So far, so good. The plans get faster and cheaper every year or so, and that has been an unexpected bonus.
Re: Current best internet and TV options in the city
Interesting that you can transfer the 3BB service. The Pattaya 3BB is in Mrs Tam's name and I imagine transferring it would mean retaining the same service and price and not being able to get the faster/cheaper options that a new account attracts.Gar wrote:We had 3BB when we lived in Pattaya, and transferred it up to Udon. I'm not sure that is a valid assumption. Only 3BB knows for sure.tamada wrote:Interesting that you can transfer the 3BB service. I do know from personal experience that there has been no problems changing my ToT plan to faster speeds when they come out with a better plan.

Re: Current best internet and TV options in the city
Tamada, if Home Cable is available in the area where you will move, then I highly recommend that. I have 150 television channels, many of which are in HD, and one free box is given for one TV location within the home. The internet is fiber optic in my village, and I get 15 megabytes of download and 5 megabytes of upload. The entire package is only 590 per month, and if one pays for 6 months in advance then a free month of service is given. That brings the price down to only 506 Baht per month for 7 months of service. For new users the installation is free, but there is a small deposit on the modem. There is NO contract, so the service is month to month unless you take advantage of the 6 month promotion. I have used their services for nearly 6 years and am totally satisfied. During those years I can count on one hand the number of interruptions in service that I have had, and once a phone call was made the problem was corrected right away. For me the 15/5 internet speed is lightning fast and I can't see why anyone would need anything faster than that, so why pay for it.

I haven't taken the time to peruse these sites to see if a channel line-up is available online, but you can pick up a brochure with that information at their main office not far from Central Plaza. I am attaching a location map here, and if you will double left click on the image it will enlarge for you. The store is indicated by the red dots. Re: RE: Re: Current best internet and TV options in the city
I didn't test my assumption as their desk at Big C east was super busy at lunch time today; three people signed up ahead of me so in a 45 minute holding pattern. Anyway, I just signed up for the 700 baht/month VDSL (6 months pre-pay because I am not Thai) and the service should be up and running 'in about 5 days'. Got my 800 baht modem and the login details so good to go. I'll be back next weekend to see how it went.Gar wrote:I'm not sure that is a valid assumption. I think they all limit what service upgrades one can get short of closing your account (after the minimum 1 year) and then signing up for the latest and greatest on a new account.
