is there a map that shows the different areas

I'm looking to make a move to Udon from Chiang Mai and I was looking at rentals in the DD Property website. They list the area such as Nong Khon Kwang but I have no idea where that is at.

I tried the Maps link at Udonmap but couldn't find anything to click on. Does anyone have a link to a map that shows the various areas in Udon Thani and any recommendations on what areas might be best and any ones to avoid?

There's a great wikimapia that shows all the villages around Pattaya and Jomtien. I found a similar one for Udon but like anything wiki-related, relies on active user input so it is sadly lacking in data.

Something for someone to do on (another) wet weekend in Udon?

This is a bit rubbish but there's a really good one on the wall of the office at the back of DoHome, I did take a photograph of it but I can't find it, if anyone else is that way it's a really useful map.

I'm looking for a 2 or 3 bedroom (2/3 bath) detached home either unfurnished or partially furnished. I got a great deal on the house I currently live in here in Chiang Mai. It was a new 3 bedroom 3 bath house when I rented it and it literally didn't have anything in it. I put in the curtain rods, curtains, hot water heater airconditioners etc and my rent has only been 7,000 baht. There seems to be some decent houses listed on DD Property for that range but being unfamiliar with the area I have no idea if these are suitable or not.

Can anyone tell me are there any areas I should avoid (safety, flooding, traffic, etc) and are there better areas I should consider where the rental prices are reasonable. Thanks again.

Are you looking for a house inside the Ring Road, in a gated community, in a Thai village or in the sticks by itself? If you open Udonexpat¨s link, you can find it there. Nong Khon Kwang it inside the Ring Road between the #2 road from Khon Kaen and the road to Sakhon Nakhon.

The problem is I don't know where the Ring Road is since I still can't find a map that shows what specifics such as where the sub-districts are located. I am not looking to be out in the sticks and currently live in a gated community but I have no idea what is available in Udon Thani, nor where most of the expats live.

I guess I will just have to make a trip or two and spend some time going around to see what is available. Perhaps I will contact someone at DD Property once I have a few places they list I think might be okay and meet up with one of their people to take me around to start. Never enjoyed uprooting and moving but hopefully this will be the last time, if I get lucky that is.

If you go to website Google Earth and write Udon Thani in the search box, you will find it. Zoom in a bit and you can see the Ring road around the town. Zoom in a little more and the names of villages and other places will appear. The road that comes from the south at the bottom of the map, is main road #2 from Khon Kaen and Bangkok.

You can buy a street map, old-school edition, in English from a variety of book stores in Udon. In my early days here, it helped to have the old style fold out map where I didn't need to use a magnifying glass or mouse to see 'the big picture'. The Udon map shows all the outlying areas, including Nongkai, Nongbualamphu, etc. Less than 200 baht.
I'm sure you can find one in one of the many bookstores in Central. Ask for Paan Tee Udon (map of Udon).

The ring road is what it is, an almost perfect circle around the extents of Mueang Udon Thani ranging about 3 km to 5km from the city center.

I think that 'most expats' live in Baan San Sa-Ran estate (village) just off the east ring road in what would be called T. Nongbua district. East side of town, outside ring road.

That's an exaggeration but you wouldn't do wrong by living there. In reality, the expats are scattered all over the shop from inner-city to relative boonies but still probably only 15-20 minutes out of town.

I am not sure if DD Property has agents per-se as I think it's an aggregator type website for multiple realtors listings.

Anyway, working on your map issue so watch this space.

If you want to DIY, just type the tambon name + udon thani in google and the small map comes up top of the pile. Double click the small map and it launches full page and you can zoom and print or whatever you want.

for example "mu mon udon thani"

The Google Maps mobile app must work differently. I use my iPad more than anything & have tried what you say but it seems to just select a random place within the tambon & drop a pin. I'm now sitting at my laptop for a change & tried it & it work perfectly as you describe. I'm giong to try & create a layered map so it shows all the tambons on the same background of Udon Thani province

The map to the right shows you the Tambon in red..

^ Yes, wiki is good for getting a list of all the Amphoe's in a Province but doesn't give maps of Tambons inside each Amphoe.

When I was working in Bangkok, I had access to some really creative overlay mapping in google earth that was handy when tracking the flooding on our work sites in Surat Thani and Sa Kaeo. I have done some add-on mapping in google earth but nothing so complex but there's plenty of online advice and utilities to help one turn readily available GIS data into viewable maps. Finding the repositories of the free GIS data needs a bit of sleuthing though.
