It was a scourge then, now it's a crisis.
The number of overdoses is staggering......but then the number of gun related deaths is equally staggering.

I might be mistaken on why somebody referred to "racism" in this thread, but let's see
if I have it right.

Back in the 80's the CIA aided and abetted the Contras (freedom fighters for Reagan... otherwise known as terrorists to most other people around the world) when they were selling cocaine into the USA. The CIA figured it was mostly going to the black neighbourhoods so who cares right? Much more important to overthrow a democratically elected socialist government and install a puppet right wing dictator.... so obvious. At the time we heard politicians talk about putting more of these American (read... mostly black) drug users and sellers in prison (helping the new private prison industry). Later Hillary (HRC) said that there were black "super predators" running loose and how they had to be "brought to heal." Now that the opioid epidemic is mostly effecting white middle class families - what is left of them - it is not these bad people selling and doing drugs, it is now a problem with the pharma industrial complex and a health crisis.

I might be putting words into peoples mouths here, so forgive me if I have gotten it all wrong.

As nearly every other country,incuding Sweden,we think that what comes from US is good..Yes we are thought US history in schools in Sweden,but it's up to each and every one to check the truth behind what we been thaught,right.

That said,i don't know ONE singel goverment in any country not to be "corrupt"..and whenever i'm in the mood to check things that the Swedish goverment done..AFTER election..well you know the answer..a lot of talk and not to much walk.

Louisiana has the highest adult obesity rate at 36.2 percent and Colorado has the lowest at 20.2 percent".And then ad the opiod abuse..You please tell me what you as an US citizen think...does it really have to do with beeing white or black..I think it has to do that we as humans choose,to walk the 6 lane road of life instead of taking a minut to reflext that maybe the narrow dirtroad in life teach you moore of what the real meaning of life is...without drugs..ciggs,snuff,opioids..and moore.Most people run away from problems. They don’t want to deal with them. But the world is filled with problems, and those problems need solutions.
Embrace the problems.

To grow and mature takes time and williness to learn from your own misstakes..trust your self,not your Doc,not your Goverment..ask yourself what path in life you want..big road or dirt road..If you think that overeating/drinking..is anything else then taking the easy way out..well be my guest..I look at my own country now,i don't like what i see AT ALL..

As when you cook your wonderful food over there, you use your own recipe. A touch of this, a dash of that.... I would not want to give the impression that personal responsibility is not involved. Take the CIA's antics out of the equation and the problem would not just disappear. But in the case of the USA, with the history of slavery, COINTELPRO, etc. etc. it becomes a much more complex issue. Certainly no easy targets for scape-goating in this epidemic. Global drug companies, certain Doctors, and white middle class voters, are not quite so easy targets as black drug gangs were.

Thanks for educating me on how this is not solely a US issue. A problem in Sweden too eh? hmmm not quite to the same extent though, correct? As you yourself have implied.

For those who are ignorant of US demographics, Black Americans comprise about 12% of the population. Latinos about 14% of the population. Asians maybe 4% or a little less. 65-70% White European descent makes up the other portion. As much as most Blacks (about 95%) and some Latinos (not nearly all) wanted Obama to be elected, Whitey had to have voted in droves for Obama to win. That doesn't translate into racism -- or racial prejudice -- or racial discrimination.

Obama's vote count in 2008 was 359. In 2012 it was 303. By contrast, Trump's vote count in 2016 was 306.

Numbers don't lie, but America-haters do.

Prejudice and discrimination and antagonism are NOT racism. They are separate components entirely and based on beliefs and actions that do NOT have to have any connection to racial superiority. Not all people who practice any form of racial prejudice or discrimination are necessarily racist.

Example:

Mary's brother was killed by a drunk driver who happened to be Latino. Mary is racially prejudiced against all Latinos based on that isolated incident, and she has stereotyped them. Mary discriminates against them when she has the power to systematically exclude them. Mary's not racist. She doesn't believe she is superior to Latinos. She just doesn't like them because of what happened to her brother.

It is why there are only laws against racial discrimination -- because it is an act. Prejudice and Racism are beliefs that are unknown unless the offender communicates it. That's why all crimes between different races are not necessarily hate crimes or based on race. There has to be evidence beyond the confrontation that one of the offenders was acting based on a racial bias.

Education is power.
