Is it Falong, Falang or Farang
Having a discussion with someone who thinks Falong sounds like what Thais say??? I hear farang or falang which is right....

Not sure on the spelling, but when my wife talks, sounds like "FAR LUNG".

ฝรั่ง fà-ràng

I believe that Stevo has it right. Keep in mind though that different areas of Thailand have different ways of pronouncing words. Here in Isaan, for example, the "r" in "farang" is usually pronounced as an "l" making it sound like "falang". In Central, South or Northern Thailand it may well be a different pronunciation. I don't use the word much but when I do I pronounce it fà-ràng and everyone understands it.Stevo wrote:ฝรั่ง fà-ràng

My own experience: There is no universally accepted transliteration of Thai (like Pinyin or Wade Giles for Chinese). Is it Udon (you won't say it correctly) or Udorn (you'll say it more correctly but transliterate it in a way that's not generally accepted)? As long as that's the case, you'll constantly have problems with Thais understanding what you're saying, especially if you're trying to speak in sentences.
If you want to say ฝรั่ง fà-ràng the right way, buckle down and learn to read Thai. It's difficult, but not impossible. You don't have to have ears for tones (I have profound hearing loss). It just takes time.......and that, most of us have plenty of.

for the shape of the fruit which is very round like our eyes are to them just like all words can be said jokingly or hatefully keep a cool heart smile and keep on keeping on just saying.... john

I believe that it's farang in origin but pronounced falang here because Thais (as well as other Asians) have trouble forming the "r" sound as an initial consonant in a syllable.

Re: Is it Falong, Falang or Farang
Asked my 1st Thai wife in the US, around 1997, what is "Falong, Farang", is it a good or bad word. She said it was not good. 2nd thai wife 2010 says it means Westerner.
Thais are butchering their language and I call them Lazy Thais. But its not any different than "slum" or Rap words being pushed into the US. "Myblelie" = Mai Pan Rai

Farang is a bigoted word so it's more bad than good. Thais are very nationalist so they have negative feelings towards other non white foreigners as well.
But westerners have bigoted words for asians as well.
