just realized jon, you got 200 types of beer to deal with, oh my Buddha, imagine the confusion just with leo/chang/arch sellers. you must be pulling your hair out mate..... and sugar tax too... I think a salad bar for vegans that don't drink or smoke might work.
hey just realized ,no effect for me.... I don't drink or smoke anymore anyway

My local vendor increased her price by 5 Baht to 575 Baht a box for Leo. OK, she is taking a quick profit -- AS THEY ALL DO -- but it's not going to break the bank!

As with the last excise increase:-

Lets see where the price is after the dust settles! After the last excise increase I had seen a 20 Baht/box increase (I was paying 550 Baht) --- the scalpers were charging 590+ until competition forced their hand. Don't forget the nonsense where the last excise increase was gazetted months before the event and most every VENDOR was hording. When the increase date arrived the vendor I had been using tried to sell me swill that was >6 months old = haven't done business with them since

AND also lets not forget the Leo bottle size has reduced to 620 ml without a price reduction during the current pricing period.

After all, its an increase in excise, not an increase in the total cost of a beverage unit (and we all know the easiest things to tax are what most people enjoy).

My limited understanding to date, is that beer will not be overly affected, maybe 10-25 baht a bottle, hopefully less than 10. Again, to my limited understanding, is that spirits and plonk will cop a hammering, due to the alcohol content, but the definition of "white spirits" remains unclear to me. Is it a reference to Lao Kao & such other rocket fuel only, or does it include gin, white rum, vodka? "White spirits" apparently attract a lesser excise increase.

Who knows, it could be almost anything. TIT! I'll reserve my judgment until I can read the excise increases in English, and wait and see.

Let us all hope that Cpl jones is right, Papafarang

They seem to be going the protectionism route upping the tax on imported wines more than local wines, which is a shame as local wines is akin to rocket fuel, and in Villa market they were getting a nice selection of imported wines.
We are anywhere we go subject to vagaries of the Governments tax requirements and this one ( Thailand ) the Govt appears to me leaking cash so it needs more . Although I would like to see Lao Kao increased by 1000% to deter Thais and their stupid drinking which is the cause of many road accidents I am sure .

A big bottle of Leo was only 3 baht more this afternoon at the local mom and pop. L&M cigarettes were the same price as before, but perhaps old stock. She said some brands had gone up, but not L&M. Maybe later, we will see. A 3 baht increase for Leo is nothing to fret about if it remains at that level.

hey waita minute!!! Protectionism???? What ever happened to the highly vaunted Asian Economic Community with tariff reductions and ease of trade?? Last the government spoke about it, oh, perhaps the end of 2014, it was claimed "everything is on track!"

Actually, "Everything is on track" and ahead of many other nations for pushing the Agenda 21 "needs". The Military has recieved several "Awards" for their prrgress.
Lao Kao..who is the inventor and seller of this? All it does is kill people faster, especially the poorer people in the N. East.
Here the cancer and kidney diease is higher than anywhere in Thailand. The Sellers should be executed, as the Chinese did with the baby formula, melimine. Unless they are government officials, then, they get "a pass".
