Can't buy beer today at 1 PM?

Post by HUMYAI » October 1, 2017, 1:48 pm

I went to Tesco Express today at 1 PM and they would not sell me beer. They said you can't buy beer until 5 PM. Did I enter the Twilight Zone? I've been buying beer at Tesco between 11AM and 2PM for years. Is it because it is Sunday? What happened?

Benchwarmers received written notice from the Office of Alcoholic Beverage Control Committee earlier today, as did other bars in my area. Part of the document appears to be the enforcement of the non-sale of alcohol between 2pm and 5pm, amongst other things. My reading of it is that it applies to every liquor outlet. I'm going to get clarification from my lawyer ASAP.

Hey Baz

anything on the letter that indicates that for an hour or so either side it is up to the discretion of the checkout maid (similar to immigration) ,
Not got a problem with them enforcing the current law (even if, as they say, "the law's an ass"), but if they are going to change the hours depending on how they feel on any given day [-X

Humyai.

What a great name. 555.

It's well known that you gotta keep a few tinnies at home for emergencies such as a man's early afternoon thirst or some shopkeeper dicking you around on the time you can buy a farang's little helper.

First they up the tax so that Jo public cant afford booze
Then they get the brewers to stop supplying and importers to stop importing
Then they stop anyone selling the stuff even outside the restricted hours
Then
Then

PROHIBITION is on the way

Will Isaan be a "Wet" or "Dry" region????????

Statto, no mention of discretion in the document.

It refers to "categories 3 to 6 of the 'spirits' Act". Until I get clarification from my lawyer, hopefully tomorrow, I won't know for sure about booze sales times, but IMO, It's a 98% that everybody's stuck with no beer sales 2-5pm

Few years ago at the Old Tesco, i had intended to buy wine. When came time to check-out, i glanced at my phone to see if it was after 5pm ( 17:00 ), according to my phone it was 17:12, so i proceeded to the cashier, the young man scanned all except that the scanner would not read the wine bottles, he told me you can t buy wine before 17:00. and ask me to wait till 17:00 I googled << UD time now >> and it read something like 17:15. So their scanning system allows certain products to be scanned at specific times. 7-11 most likely operates the same way. But the system clock is out of phase with the rest of the universe.

Summer time in NZ doesn't mark the arrival of summer but I think we just about all look forward to it and celebrate it. We swing over earlier than Oz but that gets confusing.

For example last Saturday the Aussie Rules football grand final was 3 hours behind our time but the Sunday rugby league grand final the next day was only 2 hours behind. This is a challenge for sports lovers who generally aren't known for being top of the class.

Fortunately we don't have crazy times about purchasing booze. I think many countries have odd liquor laws. In NZ you can't buy spirits in a supermarket. You need to do that in a booze shop. They're usually owned by a Chinese, Indian or Korean immigrant.

"They're usually owned by a Chinese, Indian or Korean immigrant."

Is that coz they are the ones that are expert at Karate/Kung Fu or having 27 family members behind the counter for safety GT?

It is actually law mate , no beer between 2-5 pm , been that for years . but they never enforced it, same as makro can't buy between 2-5 pm unless wholesale, I think it was 10lt minimum , but now you even have to bring your license to prove you are a bar. so no change , just enforcing it now . not that it matters to bars in town as most don't even open. and it makes no difference if you serve food. you can get a license from Bangkok, but the likes of Tesco and big c , they got refused, that's why they can't sell. one mystery is drinking up time . the law only applies to sales , it don't stop you drinking or even staying open . you simply can't sell between 2-5 pm. . thing is Baz it it your area or all over town ?

That doesn't seem to make any sense at all wazza.......... many bars stayed open this time last year after the death (all be it with low key music), so why would they close a year later?

If they said close for a few hours on the day of cremation I could understand that as a mark of respect.

Thats what the expat and local licence holders are asking etc

Comes down to that Thai Sentence we all dread and despise

" At discretion of the Provincial Governor / Licencing Head or Junta General "

If they can leak all of these early releases why can't they inform every one about the price increases??????? that came about a couple of weeks ago.
