Morning Coffee and a Snake
Morning Coffee and a Snake
Nothing will kick in the morning cup of coffee like finding a snake in your house.
This morning while enjoying a particularly strong cup of Lao coffee I found a snake in the area between the mosquito screen and the sliding glass door.
I armed myself with TWO cans of bug spray, a broom, and a machete.
About two minutes after a couple of well placed blasts of the spray to the head, the snake fell to the floor and drunkenly slithered out from his hiding place. I then swept his a*s out into the carport, where I quickly dispatched him to snake heaven. I'll leave out the gory details.
The snake was about 3 feet long and around a half inch in diameter. Skinny little pointed head. Kind of reminded me of someone I saw at...no, no, no, I'll be nice.

I have this Indiana Jones image going in my head... Maybe you could have left out the bit about the broom!jingjai wrote:This morning while enjoying a particularly strong cup of Lao coffee I found a snake in the area between the mosquito screen and the sliding glass door. So you know my ex mother in law then?jingjai wrote:Skinny little pointed head. Kind of reminded me of someone I saw at...no, no, no, I'll be nice.
Got one in the roof of my garage right now, Its about 1 mtr long, thick as my index finger ,and bright green in colour. The wifes chasing it with a broom,( must be a Thai custom). The man who knows about these things, Pops, tells me its a viper. The missus says" Kill you, kill you.SanBorn wrote:I'm just curious. Is there any poisonous snakes around Udon?
Previously we had a python, about 3 mtrs long and as thick as my arm, which although not poisonous, can give you a nasty squeeze.Even the dog kept clear.

We have regular visits around our outdoor kitchen from small cobras, the dogs have fun teasing them but keep a good enough distance...they aren't as dumb as they look.
My wife does the same as Val's and sweeps them out of the gate if she can get them that far before they slither off.... Me, I always leave well alone...If these are the babies then Mama & Papa can't be far away....
We also have this thin snake about 2 ft long, brown with dark green lines runing down its back that lives in the tailgate of our truck. I chase it out on a weekly basis but the bugger always comes back. No nest inside we checked....

You mean like this one (below)? It climbed up my garden wall a few weeks ago to avoid the lawn sprinkler. My wife made a similar comment "This one will kill you sure."valentine wrote:Got one in the roof of my garage right now, Its about 1 mtr long, thick as my index finger ,and bright green in colour. You are joking, no????We also have this thin snake about 2 ft long, brown with dark green lines runing down its back that lives in the tailgate of our truck. I chase it out on a weekly basis but the bugger always comes back. No nest inside we checked....
The snake lives inside your truck???
When you go for a drive, shopping or so;
the snake stays inside the truck???
This is incredible, never heard of such a thing!!!
Rick, can't be sure but it appears to be one of the Pit Viper family. The one in my roof was a Popes Pit Viper, brilliant emerald green in colour. All members of the viper species are potentially very dangerous, more so than the cobra family. This is not because they are more venonmous but the Vipers venom is almost instantly active. Thereby preventing an anti injection, taking place before it takes hold. Hope that was a Telephoto lenses.

Not joking, ths damn thing stays inside the tailgate of the truck. We don't see it every day but guess its there most of the time... but maybe not we don't really know
We took the plastic bed cover off and the metal access cover under that and theres no sign of a nest so we just ignore it most of the time. If I'm loading / unloading or cleaning the truck and I see it I chase it out, apart from that live and let live is the motto......

Valentine,
Thank you for the confirmation. I was standing about 3 meters away, as close as I though it prudent to get. We sure won't be walking on the back yard lawn at night anymore, that's for sure!
The story about the snake in Kudap's truck reminds me of when a friend's son's pet snake got loose in his car. He had removed the seats and dashboard, and pulled out several wiring harnesses before they were able to retrieve the snake. What a mess!

Irish Alan, Thanks! I've always thought that there was a striking resemblance between Harrison Ford and myself. Of course, my wife says I'm better looking.
Some locals once told me there is a snake called the "three step", it bites you and you take three steps and your dead. Don't know if it's true or some Thai urban legend and they were taking the piss out of me.
I have heard that if you are bit, get yourself to the Army Hospital.

That's better than my friend's experience -- he keeps pythons as pets (no comment), and the rat that he bought for the snake's periodic dinner got loose in the car on the way home from the pet store. Hmmmmm.....rat or snake? What a choice!rickfarang wrote: The story about the snake in Kudap's truck reminds me of when a friend's son's pet snake got loose in his car. Snake Bites
Thailand has many venomous snakes. When walking at night always carry a flashlight; take special care after heavy rains. While some people suffer no reaction to the bites of even normally deadly it's after by a snakes, important being bitten snake to:
* Keep calm.
* Immobilize the bitten limb as far as is practicable.
* Avoid harmfiil first aid measures.
* Get to the hospital as soon as possible.
Most commercially available snakebite kits do more harm than good. However, the speed of the lethal effects of snake venom has been much exaggerated; a lethal dose of venom usually takes hours to kill rather than seconds.
The interval is sufficient to allow for effective treatment, thus the importance of remaining calm and hurrying to the hospital.

P.S: Here is a snake bite first-aid guide. You can also make your own snake catcher just in case Indiana Jingjai isn't available.
