Udon Thani Governor.

Post by valentine » April 20, 2007, 11:36 am

A sudden reshuffle amongst Governors of some Issan region areas has resulted in Governor Jairoot being recalled to Bangkok, and the appointment of Governor Supodt Laowunsirit as the new appontee as Governor of Udon Thani province. Some may remember him as governor of Nong Khai previously.Khun Jairoot has reportedly been under heavy pressure for allowing the recent public protest gatherings at the local military bases.
Other areas where sudden changes have been made include, Buri ram, Si Sri Skat and Nang, a total of 10 in all.
May we hope that the new man will be as farang friendly as his predecesor.
He apparently obtained his Masters Degree studying at an American University.

Would you consider this transfer to be good or bad, Val?

I do not know if good aor bad but was informed the 10 folks moved were big Ex-PM supporters. This is rumor and not fact as I can not prove it one way or the other. Maybe someone else could shed some light on this.

Well from a strictly personal point of view, I had got to know Khun Jairoot very well and he coined the phrase" Udon Thani , sons in law, seeing us all ,as married to his daughters, the ladies of Udon. I cannot judge his successor as I haven't , as yet ,had the chance to meet him, but I am sure he will realise the contribution all us farangs make to the prosperity of the region and respond accordingly, as we will to him.
To respond to Banpaegn. I am not sure of the deposed governors political loyalties after the revolution, but you must realise these posts are all government of the day, appointments, so would have therefore been given their assignments under the Thaksin regime. It is normal for the new incumbents to want their own faces in place, especially in a sensitive area, as this one appears to be.I think to say any more would be rather insensitive as a guest of this fine country.

I think you may be confusing him with the Mayor, Khun Hanchai. He is the leader of Udons big bikers.

In which case we will have a Mayor and a Governor astride the odd Harley, but I wouldn't invite the latter on one of your country rides as he is normally accompanied by siren screaming police escorts wherever he goes. Not exactly the peaceful afternoon I,m sure you have in mind.

Photos of the new governor

He apparently went to Pennsylvania State University from 1973-78. He is 59, the same age as the deposed governor who
gave an interview in which he stated he had been wrongly accused of being too lenient in allowing "mobs" to gather in protest against the Military junta. He went on to say, he would have retired in 5 months anyway and as he had come to love Udon so much, intended to build a house here to live in.. he was very much loved and respected by all, his staff and other officials, as well as by the general public.
