Autumn is officially here and, although the changing colours of the leaves, breaking out our favourite warm jumpers and cooking up warming recipes is something to look forward to, the dreaded cough, flu and cold season most certainly isn't.
Researchers at the University of Virginia have now confirmed that there's a scientific reason why some people suffer from colds more than others – and it has nothing to do with man flu. In fact, whether you'll catch a cold or not, and how long the virus will last, is all down to the mix of bacteria in your nose.
In a paper published in the journal, Scientific Reports, infectious disease specialist Dr Ronald Turner and his team say people with more Staphylococcus bacteria in their noses are likely to have more acute cold symptoms. This is because they expel less of the virus, so have more severe symptoms for longer than those with a different mix of bacteria.
The scientists tested the nasal microbiomes of 152 study participants before and after they had been infected with the cold virus. They were able to identify six 'buckets' of bacteria types, including increased levels of Staphylococcus bacteria.
More research is needed in to acute cold and flu symptoms and Staph bacteria, Dr Turner says.
"It may well be that there’s some underlying host characteristic that makes you likely to have staph in your nose and also makes you more likely to become ill," he says.

Re: why you get long lasting colds
Forget the vinegar ....... just take a large dose of apple cidar
When you wake up, if the symptoms still persist, repeat the dose until all cold signs have disappeared
I can barely remember the last time I had a cold
