Gout is NOT caused by a poor diet! Study debunks centuries-old myth and reveals genetics are mostly to blame
Genetics is responsible for 23.9% of a person's urate count, which raises the risk
Famous sufferers include Henry VIII and the founding father Benjamin Franklin
Gout affects around one in 40 in the UK and 8.3 million in the US

It's been thought for centuries that gout can be caused by a poor diet.
But a myth-bunking study has confirmed that the painful form of arthritis is not triggered by unhealthy eating.
Overindulging in beer, wine and red meat increases a person's risk of the painful joint condition by just one per cent.
Instead, the inflammatory condition is largely driven by genetics, University of Otago researchers found.
Famous sufferers include Henry VIII, with the Tudor monarch being the reason gout is known as the 'disease of kings'.
And founding father Benjamin Franklin is said to have missed many meetings that were held to draft the Declaration of Independence due to gout.

Re: Gout not caused by bad diet ,claims
I had my first attack of gout two weeks ago.i got it right in my left foot big toe ball joint and been told this is where it usually starts.i just started taking a diuretic water pill and 4 days into it the pain came over night.i then read up on the side effects and hey presto the answer was there.anyway I've now stopped and after a few days the pain went.so it's now a case of drink less and the water retention will be less.

Not sure about gout being a myth. If I eat lots of prawns and or lots of duck I know I will not be able to walk for a week.
Same with booze, when I hit 10 pints of 2 bottles of champers I'll be hobbling around like a 90 year old.
Doesnt sound like genetics to me, although I'd be open to the idea that genetics makes you more or less susceptible to getting gout.
