whenever i have to deal with government officials, i take the "phujai baan" with me.
this kind of official support spared me a lot of anger.
i came to the impression that government workers are more cautious when a "phujai baan" is involved.
tipping mr. nice guy with 500 baht is ok for the both of us and makes things run much smoother.

ask your wife/gf if you don't know who's the "phujai baan" for your area and give it a try next time.

Tried to get a yellow book going today at Amphoe Phen but big boss wont do it unless you are married , while getting resident certificate in udon immigration they said you dont have to be married to get one but Phen boss not agree

Yes! Phen Amphur does NOT do things the same way as anyone else. I have been refused my Yellow Book several times although I am Married, and have my Thai Drivers Lic., A Letter from the Udon Thani Immigration stating that I LIVE in Thailand and at the Address listed in Amphoe Phen. As well as a Spousal Visa of curse. I am starting to think that the people at that office hate foreigners. So I am moving into a Condo in Udon Thani. The People in Phen are great, but that office sucks things best left unsaid.

Got mine in Somdet, Kalasin a few days ago. Not married, so had to jump through a few hoops. They do push the marriage angle. Can do straight away if married. 555. "Fee" requested was 600 baht. Should be free, but what do you do. They ask 20 baht from Thais to do Blue Book updates so everyone gets stung. Sorry about the hassles you guys have up there.

I got my yellow book 10 years ago. I have never used it for anything. Complete waste of time.

Spot on! as well as opening a new bank account, purchasing a car or motorbike, annual extension to name a few uses one thing it isnt it's certainly not useless or a waste of time.

Your experiences may differ, but I'm not exaggerating. I've never used my yellow book. It's an important point. People's experiences with Thai officialdom and bureaucracy are highly variable. I opened bank accounts without it, immigration has never wanted to see it, I've purchased vehicles without it. It has sat in my lock-box for a decade having never, ever been used. Obtaining a yellow book, for me, so far, was a complete waste of time and money. Anybody who thinks their experiences are shared, with little variance, among all other foreigners here is sadly mistaken.

And I am not saying you are lying either. Although I considered the two visits to the Udon Amphur to get mine as being mostly an exercise in inefficient Thai local government hokey pokey, having a yellow book (and the subsequent pink ID card) has facilitated vehicle purchases, account opening, banking and otherwise and satisfied other similarly arcane or abstruse requests of proof of where I live. By your own admission that no one farang's experience is a universal here in Diddy Land, I could probably have bought cars or opened accounts without it by having some other document with acceptability but having it when asked didn't exactly make any wheels come off the wagon.

Now, read your last sentence again, look at this post and the two immediately preceding it and let me know who "thinks their experiences are shared, with little variance, among all foreigners"? Maybe you just haven't used your yellow book yet.

That's only one person's experience-- read my post again. And for those experiencing severe difficulty or impossibility in obtaining theirs, I'm merely suggesting a yellow book isn't as indispensable as others might suggest. Thanks for proving my point.

But there's no point to prove.

We are agreed that YOUR experience is that you can mostly get by without it.

We are agreed that MY experience is that it has mostly made things easier.

The first statement cannot be taken as meaning that it is totally worthless to all people.

The second statement cannot be taken as meaning that is totally indispensable either.

I fully agree that if one's local Amphur is ignorant and it needs too much effort, just don't bother.

But if you have bugger all to do one afternoon and your Amphur is amenable to it, then why not get it (and the ID card ) anyway? Rubbing shoulders with the great unwashed, waiing office flunkies that you would otherwise hold in contempt and gritting your teeth at the ---- in the parking lot, blowing a whistle and waving his arms about.

If you do get one, don't post about it lest it opens the wounds of those that are still upset about a 'complete waste of time and money' from 20 years ago.

the yellow book? ,i have made this book about 16 years ago , and the only time i use it is to renew my drivers license and extension visa ....you always have a proof of domicile with this book , in case what ever happens?

well if gigs has no use for it ,I wonder what he will do the day some jumped up uniform asks him for it . in the uk I probably last pulled out my driving license in early 1990's so possibly in 25 years I needed it once , does that make a driving license useless ? plus I've never used it in Thailand either . maybe I should go with gigs and just bin it .
or maybe be sensible and keep it as I might need it someday . for what I don't know. my superpowers of reading the future are non existent

Also means you can buy a car or motorbike in your name with letter from immigration. I have also showed it at Bangkok airport and fast tracked immigration queue. Some Parks allow you to get in as a local but that's just some. others want pink I'D card others want your that tax number lucky I have all 3 great to watch their faces when they think your beaten and pull out what's asked for lol

Not very good with analogies, I see. So it's statistics, graphs, simple grammar, and analogies . A license is mandatory and required by law. A yellow book is not mandatory, sometimes useless, and often refused or made impossibly difficult to the law-abiding. Give yourself a shake, man.
