Quality, solid-built, large, wicker-backed rattan chairs
Quality, solid-built, large, wicker-backed rattan chairs
Mate of mine needs 4 new ones to replace some that have been holding up for over 10 years in his busy bar. Unfortunately, his usual rattan chair suppliers are no longer in business so looking for similar to these. Must be real solid, heavy built as the guys that tend to sit around in his bar are big fat bastards who need to spread out. Must come with decent cushions and will need 4 spare cushions as well.

Maybe better to make out of round bar and mesh then paint wood colour lol

Mrs tam even checked the rattan makers while visiting the rels in Ubon last month and they say anything that needs to be bigger or use thicker bamboo and wicker would be a custom-build. Looks like they don't build 'em like the used to over there either.

Re: Quality, solid-built, large, wicker-backed rattan chairs
A couple of years ago I wanted to have a small rattan stool and no one seemed to know where they came from until we came to the Indochine market in Nong Khai. The piece I wanted came from Laos and maybe you should try to find your chair there.
Many years ago I lived in the Phillipines and I remember that there were "rattan"-factories absolutely everywhere, not so here in Thailand I cannot understand why.

Several years ago I had two chairs with steel frames and rattan weaving. The rattan was tattered and needed replaced. Someone recommended the Udon Thani jail. The inmates do some furniture building. So we took the chair frames over there and asked if they could re-do the rattan. They did.
That was more than 10 years ago and they are still holding up well.

Checked out that last one as it's near the house and quoted 5200 baht each and about 3 weeks for a custom build. A wee bit paeng I reckon. Looks like they are keen on selling all that new, boxy looking patio furniture made from woven plastic. Rattan chairs used to be good for about 20 years if looked after properly. New plastic 'rattan' looks like it will still be bobbing about in the oceans once the polar caps have all melted and we have been burned off the face of the planet by radiation.parrot wrote: ↑February 13, 2019, 3:53 pmBoth addresses below are in Udon:

When I visit places like Phuket and Samui, I realize that there is no shortage of high quality furnishings available in Thailand......just maybe not in Udon. The website below seems to offer a better grade of rattan.....but as with most things 'better grade' you're going to pay a premium.
There are lots of other rattan makers in Thailand.....you can google search เฟอร์นิเจอร์หวาย to get a sample.

I wondered where all the old rattan fabricators went!Giggle wrote: ↑February 13, 2019, 4:10 pmSeveral years ago I had two chairs with steel frames and rattan weaving. Good tip though. My buddy's bar is down in Pattaya so maybe he can go check if there are similarly skilled incarcerates at the Nongplalai lockup.
