5 Year Renewal of Driver's License

off to the License Bureau south of the city today
Papers in hand , copy of Passport, Retirement Visa, Departure Card, Front and Back of Present License, Letter from Immigration of residency( No I don't have a Yellow book). Upstairs and given another piece of paper and off to get reflexes, colour test and Distance testing, done . The wife paid the bill. Then off to the cinema to watch 50 minutes of film (what they said was beyond me as all in Thai). Got my picture taken.
Now I don't know if it makes any difference but I showed up one day after my expiration of my 5 year License and was given a 6 year License as compared to if I showed up before my expiration and only getting a 5 year

Now I don't know if it makes any difference but I showed up one day after my expiration of my 5 year License and was given a 6 year License as compared to if I showed up before my expiration and only getting a 5 year

It does make a difference it is always to your 5th birthday after the date you renew so by waiting until the day after your birthday you gain 364 extra days.

I considered letting license expire 1 day before getting renewal however, I am the only person who can drive into Udon ( I live 30 minutes out) and it is a very tense drive both into Udon and returning home. Therefore, I considered the risk of driving on an expired license and felt not worth the risk. In case of accident regardless of who is at fault, insurance company will not pay if I have an expired license which means big bucks out of pocket for me.

Excuse the digression. I am gathering information for a possible retirement in Thailand. If you have your passport is a drivers licence useful when living in Thailand. I have no intention of driving when in Thailand. In the USA the drivers licence is the common mean for proving identity at banks and other.

If you don't drive, it's not very useful as you have to have your passport for most transactions, though a yellow book and pink card can be a substitute for some. Personally I carry a laminated copy of my passport ID page and extension & TM6 that is often enough.

Went to AEK this afternoon around 1:05. Got one of the last seats for the 1:30 film. Presented (wasn't asked) my old license, my pink ID, my yellow book, and my passport.
My passport expires in 2023....but my new license is good until 2024.
550 Baht. Pretty simple process........it just takes time.

1st renewal of the licence changes the expiry date to your birthday hence the added time.

Colt, you need a medical certificate, sure. I went to local hospital for mine. Depends if the Officer 's time of month or if Yik performed that night.

No medical certificate is needed from 5 year to 5 year.
Only from 2 year to 5 year.
