I would have thought that happened when Dutton decided he could roll Turnbull. I'm surprised the polls are so close given how dysfunctional the Coalition has become.

I suspect the dreadful Rwandans aren't the only problematic people Australia received from the US. Trump probably unloaded more than just a couple of murderers on Australia. There might be dozens of them.

The coalition had a good chance TT, but with the passing as you say of Bob Hawke, the sympathy vote will come into play and unfortunately the lower house will be a labor victory. I did like the former PM Bob Hawke and voted for him, he was a likeable rascal in his day, RIP Bob Hawke.

I to enjoyed the years of Bob Hawkes PM ship, IMO he was the last of the labor leaders, as what might have been envisaged in their policies way back then , when they were a true party for the worker. His style suited the general Aussie style at that time. He was able to play out the good cop, bad cop, with Keating and gave the Libs a flogging in parliament. but alas at the end of his time I and quite a number of punters thought he had lost his appeal and it was time for a change. Cant remember and don't care what exactly what actually caused the change of heart. But his side kick mortician Keating was not the man for the job. They were defeated handsomely and that for me was the start of the slippery slope for Labor and personally my way of thinking. Politics then was rarely spoke of much and most areas of Sydney were either die hard Labor or Liberal. Any politics spoken in a pub was short and sharp with the usual "pull your faaarkin head" in statement followed by another of "just shout a beer" dick head. There was no prolonged discussion, not like today with world wide left and right news coverage and social media platforms keeping BS going on for years and years, as in Brexit and Trump talk. I was bought up pure labour and totally went for the union thinking, but soon became disillusioned and just changed sides. The left is the scourge of society where self indulgence and minority thinking trumps most times.

That is vastly different to my memory.

Keating won the "unwinnable" 1993 election after the Hewson "Fightback" fiasco - with a 5% swing to Labor I might add.

After 13 years in government, Labor finally lost in 1996 to the Lyin' Rodent.

Glad you have memories Jackspratt. You have yours and I have mine. Wasn’t hard to beat Hewson. The libs had forgotten how to rule after Hawkes long time in office. But don’t forget labor unceremoniously sacked Bob Hawke, and in true fashion to their hypocritical form are today declaring him one if their best if not the best labor PM ever.
That’s what’s good about our politics, come the finish of the count and the winner is declared we will take the umpires decision and won’t rabbit on and on. Just step forward and get on with our lives. Others don’t seem to be able to do that.

Yes Jackspratt, Keating did win the unwinnable when John Hewson went to the polls wanting the introduction of GST. Ironically, since it's introduction and distribution back to the states, we as a society have seen huge improvements in infrastructure, education, health etc. Labor are not the only party with a strong social conscience.

You gotta love Australia. As part of their final campaign pushes in a tight contest, Bill Shorten and Scott Morrison are very keen to be seen drinking beer in a pub.

Well, that was a bit of a surprise. Well done to Morrison. It's a shame that in future oppositions are less likely to say much about what they might do.

I'm delighted Abbott's gone but I thought his concession speech suggested he wants to return. Hopefully the Liberals will be more united without him.

I'm pleased Shorten has stepped down but will remain a MP. The Leader of the NZ Labour Party before Ardern, who stood down when in opposition because of bad polling, is one of the best performing minsters in Ardern's cabinet.

How the hell anyone could vote for Palmer is beyond me.

And I am glad Australia if full of rednecks. Under the lefty snowflakes slimey greens and Labor Govt. the country would be a sea of pansies running around with flowers in their hair eating grass.

The Oz military would be downgraded, coal mining would be exterminated, coal fired power stations would cease to exist, farmers would be forced off the land and no water available, open borders with no security for everyone entering Oz, they would sell or give the Opera house and Sydney harbour bridge to China to make it a sister city.

So I hope the elected PM will allow building of more coal or nuclear fired power stations, increase coal exports, start on the Bradfield water scheme, allow more cattle and sheep exports, increase the military and increase border security, thats what us rednecks want.

So I too hope that Morrison and his crowd will start to put the interests of Australian and Australians (first second and thrid generations) first and before the interests of the UN and EU.

I just hope that the Morison government does not repeat the mistakes of the past, that of the Turnbill government and concede to a deal like that which was struck between the Obama Administration and then-Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull in 2016, whereby the U.S. agreed to take in as many as 1,250 migrants that Australia was holding in offshore refugee centers, while Australia agreed to accept ........................ Do you really know what/who the Turnbill government conceded to accept as part of the trade? Not very nice.

I enjoy Aussie politics. It's entertaining. I bought a secondhand copy of Julia Gillard's autobiography yesterday. Perhaps in 10 years I will buy Morrison's.

I don't buy into the idea that one side gets most things wrong and the other gets most things right. It's childish calling a party such as the Australian Labor Party socialist. Tory parties usually like giving out goodies too. That can be a big problem.

I heard an American reporter interviewed on Radio NZ yesterday say that Australia might have taken up to 100 problematic Central Americans from the US. That's the murder capital of the world?
