Udon western people, not friendly!

Post by SemiSiam » May 20, 2007, 1:30 am

I have been here in Udon now for 6 weeks and i have not made one friend!

I came here on a "miss and lose" kind of trip because the rest of the country is not that easy to live in if you do not have the right to have a visa to stay here that's is required.

I've been to many places in this country but i have never seen this anti interest for new people.
When i meet some foreigner in Big C or any athor shopincomplex, dead looks! Do you people here in Udon have the same racist that many thai have for new people? Or are many of you amberst to look into another westerners ayes. I joust wander!
I thought this was a nice place before i came here but i am maby wrong. Now i think this is a place fore losers ho have something to hide or even worse Pattaya shithead's with there love ones that have come here one there "girlfriends" invitation.

There is no real feeling to keep me here, am i wrong?

And what about this Pattaya shithead's. They are the people that Isaan people is going judge me for who i i am?.... Scary!

Okey, my is english not so good, but hey, do you speak good swedish!.... give me a call!

Anders

In that case, you might want to try Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Lampang, Ayutthaya, Nong Khai or Oslo.

I had similar feelings to you when I was in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland, but then I realised that people had lives to lives and were busy with their everyday thoughts and activities, and not so concerned with this tourist from Canada who was in their midst.

When I lived in a small rice-farming village outside of Chiang Mai in the mid-1980s, all my new friends came from there, and very few from the city, and Chiang Mai University, which I attended for two years. The only farangs I met were from the university, and we never formed a close relationship. Baw pen yung (mai pen rai).

When I was in Udon over Christmas, I met one farang from New York city who has become my friend. The other people at the guest house came and went. Some were married, and some were not. They all had places to go and things to do.

However, I did make some very good Thai friends over the short period I was in Udon. It just happened.

Keep trying, and if it does not work out for you in Udon Thani, go somewhere else, and try there. But I would not blame the farangs in Udon for your predicament. They are people just like everyone else...I think. Thus, if you are in the complex, Tesco's or wherever, do not expect them to rush over to welcome you to the city. I would not expect this to happen in Toronto, and I certainly would not expect it to happen in Udon.

Tak tak :D

there are lots of great guys around its just that there are just so many more westerners around these days most of the new influx seem to have a host of problems mostly antisocial behavior of various kinds
my advice is if your looking for friends is get involved in local groups there are forum users who meet up regular maybe you should go along and meet them they post the meetings in the forum
there i am sure you will meet some of the more stable elements of the new influx into udonthani and maybe some old hands from Thailand
best of look
i dont have many i would call close friends in udon but those few are salt of the earth hope you find the same and remember trust is a two way street
regards john

When I am in Udon, it surprises me how many foreigners there are.
I don't expect them all to greet me as I am probably also one of the many foreigners that they will see during the day.
But it doesn't mean that they are not interested or not friendly.

But SimiSiam, If you suggest that most of the men who live in Udon have Pattaya ***er's as a girlfriend. Than I can understand that they are not welcoming you.
I think that most of the men who have a wife there, are decent people with a decent family.

Well I might be wrong, but making friends can be easier in a bar then in Big C or any other shopping mall... So before calling the expats of Udon or their TG/TWs names, I suggests you try it out....

The girls you Anders are calling names are probably of much higher class then you will ever be Anders.

Please do not blame your language skills, a well mannered person would do his very best to be reach out in a friendly way in order to have others to over see his bad language skills in for example English. But in your case Anders you must have been intoxicated for a very long time, or just down right stupid...

Hope you never get on a bus to Pattaya....

Good response, Tilokarat!

Now, i joust want to say i have been one the road for 2 1/2 years and of course been there and done that. And the acceptation that i had for coming here to this city, Udon Thani, were absolutely different that i wold have imagine. I am disappointed to the point that this is not what i have expected from this city.
I have no trouble getting local friends and no trouble getting local girlfriend. I'm handsome, 6 foot 3 incise tall and blue ayes, 46 yo. It is joust the westerners in this city! (ar they just old and miserable?)

Where do one make friends in this city if you don't want to go to "farang alley"?

Am i lost in a unfriendly small town..... It sems like anyway!

I think the difference in attitude is because it is not a tourist town, most of the farangs you meet are not on holiday, but just live and maybe work there.

I think it's perhaps cultural differences. I am Thai born in Udon but grew up in USA. I understand both cultures and i do live both now. Thai custom is more of family knit tight sort of thing but westerns more of laid back type. I think when westerners see each other it's more like normal. There's no hype involves, just hello here and there. Because everyone pretty much mind their own bussiness especially in foreign country. They didn't really plan to go there to meet other westerners. I am I right? What is your sense of purpose to live in Thailand or other non farang countries. My guess is to escape the western style of life (not completely) but to some extent.

As for Thais' way of life...we seem to have interests in one another coz that's the way we were brought up. Thais have a lot of respect for one another. When Thais see or meet another Thais in a foreign land...they get into the so called comfort zone. That's when they will talk for hours. They want to know everything about each other; and when they found out that they're both from the same home town...LOOKOUT!!!

I think that's my observation and personal experience. My advice is just be yourself and enjoy life. Time will come. Just give more time and do what you have to do in the mean time. Take care and enjoy.

Simple answer - goodbye !

Its strange how the rest of us manage to fit in and make friends here

Who is the one with the problem ?

For your information - the type of visa you have does not dictate which town you have to live in - a Thailand visa allows you to live in any city in Thailand - so stating that "the rest of the country is not easy to live in if you don't have the right kind of visa" is rubbish.

If you feel there is "no feeling to keep you here" - then dont expect anyone to beg you to stay - your remarks and comments about those of us who do live here are derogatry and insulting and its no wonder nobody wants to make friends with you.

And finally - no most of us do not speak Swedish - that is why we speak English on this our English speaking Udon forum - and we are very happy with it.

Perhaps if you try to remove the chip on your shoulder and gain a better attitude, you might find people more willing to make friends with you.

And just for the record - I am neither old nor miserable and also I am not handsome nor do I have blue eyes - but that has still not barred me from having friends in Udon.

Its up to you !

Well well well, you are aware of your attitude problem.

Since I do know that Sweden has an excellent free mental care for their citizens, take my advice get yourself on the first plane back and seek HELP! You are nothing but a disgrace for Sweden and Swedes...

Do not bother to reply, I wont.

WOW...can't we all get along. I think this issue is going no were. I think everybody is making this into a big deal. Especially in a foreign land. Actually it's my homeland. I am Thai but I am also an American naturalized citizen. I am also an American Air Force member for over 21 yrs. and served in 2 deserts wars. I have no problem getting along with anybody in this world. You know my biggest worry...my brothers and sisters in Iraq getting killed everyday. That is my biggest concern right now...and to read this. Come on people wake up. There are far more important issues in life than this. Just enjoy life. I know I will coz I had experience being in Iraq already. I WILL SURVIVE!!!!

From what I have read on the forum, Udon's international community is well represented with intelligent people only interested in helping our community. It is like a mini Uinited Nations where we use English to communicate with each other because English is the world's international language.

SemiSiam - ditt jไvla r๖vhๅl!, hๅll kไften din jไvel!

Om du gillar inte Udon Thani, resa hem!

Sorry for the Swedish guys, but I had to put things in context for idiot, Swedes generally have very limited social skills, they don't travel well and expect everything to be the same as it is in Sweden.

I have found that the expat population in Udon is by far the most friendly I have come across in Thailand, which is why I settled in Udon!

Maybe it was me who gave you a dead look maybe not, what type of visa are you on 30 days?.If you are missing everything swedish do not ignore Pattaya there are many swedes and swedish bars there for to stay within your own sort.
Why join this forum and not read about the meetings for members, but sorry forgot you probably only have a 30 day visa so will not be around for long.
Were you not the same guy who posted about a lao girlfriend for visiting Thailand with or without a passport or am I mixing you up with another swede who was looking for boomsing in this part of the issan?
Good luck in your quest in finding happiness in some part of Thailand preferably not issan.
