Udon is about 560' above sea level. If you want your family to enjoy the sensation of ears popping, there's a place 1750' above sea level and a mere 50 or so km from the center of Udon where you can get some nice views.....no doubt would be very nice for a sunrise in a cool foggy morning or a sunset most anytime in the dry season. There's a huge jedi being built in honor of Luang Bu Lee, a famous monk who died a few years ago.
If you put พุทธมหาเจดีย์หลวงตามหาบัว into google earth, you can see exactly where the area is. At the foot of the mountain, just before you turn off the road that comes from Nongwahsaw is the Tuangsup Resort......pretty new, very nicely maintained with a nice restaurant and coffee shop. You could spend a night there and catch that day's sunset and the next morning's sunrise if you were adventuresome. There were a few Swedes staying there, enjoying the relaxed and clean surroundings. The roads to the top of the mountain are well paved.
High Altitude Travels in Udon
Re: High Altitude Travels in Udon
Parrot? was Bu Lee his nickname? Luang Ta Maha Bua is the name of the temple.
His main temple was located just southwest of Udon, Wat Pa Ban That which is worth a visit. Located here: https://www.google.com/maps/@17.2981526 ... a=!3m1!1e3
He also was the head of the now infamous and closed Tiger Temple or Wat Pha Luang Ta Bua Yanasampanno in Kanchantaburi Province.
If you go out to the new temple you'll find makers near the chedi in pavillions provide free food and drink.. Nice views eastward from the side of the ridge.. I don't know how many hectares the temple area possesses but it is a huge area.. Outside of their gate yet still within their grounds is a helipad and a dammed lake with various livestock wandering around.. About 45 minutes from Udon

Time for an afternoon cuppa so we went back for an encore visit to the view behind the jedi and then a stop at the resort at the bottom of the mountain for coffee.
The view is worth the visit......no doubt would be worth the trip in the early morning fog. Breakfast available at the bottom of the hill if you like.

Fancy a trip tomorrow with the kids. This looks like it's not too far away. Do you think access is still open?
