 I guess it is not how many complain, but who complains!Anyway ,this is one improvement long overdue =D> =D>
Airport taxis to change lanes

Taxi stands to move to arrivals on 2nd floor

AMORNRAT MAHITTHIROOK

Suvarnabhumi airport is preparing to relocate public taxi stands to the second floor of the main airport building, on the same floor as the arrivals terminal, pushing out influential private limousine operators. Suvarnabhumi airport director Serirat Prasutanond said yesterday that taxi stands would move up from the frontal road on the first floor of the passenger terminal to the second floor after the Songkran festival ends on April 17.

Passengers arriving at the airport exit from immigration and customs checks on the second floor of the airport building.

Mr Serirat said the new system was in line with the original plans set out for transport services at the airport.

''I am not concerned about what was arranged before I took office, but the current objective is to solve problems systematically by focusing on providing the most convenience for passengers by returning to the original plan,'' said Mr Serirat who, took up his position in February.

''This may affect some groups but it must be understood for the sake of problem solving.''

Buses will also be allowed to pick up passengers from the frontal road on the second floor instead of waiting at the remote bus terminal located away from the main terminal building.

Limousine services and vehicles of hotel associations and group tour operators will be relocated from the second floor down to the first floor.

Mr Serirat said the change was aimed at providing the most convenience to the majority of passengers. Limousine services are only used by a limited group of passengers, he said.

He also said the illegal but influential groups of limousine service providers were cashing in at Suvarnabhumi and that airport authorities had been catching up to 250 illegal limousine operators every day.

Passengers have complained about the difficulties of finding the public taxi stands at the new airport, prompting officials to put more signs to direct passengers from the arrivals hall.

But the measures had not been enough to quell the complaints.

Aphaluck Bhatiasevi, a civil servant who often uses the airport, said that the lack of signs had meant that in the past, she had been duped into using expensive taxi services on the second floor.

She said putting the taxis on the first floor was inconvenient for arriving passengers carrying luggage, and complained of a lack of elevators which meant long queues often formed within the terminal building for people wanting to get to the waiting taxis on the first floor.

Another frequent user of the airport, actor Karunpon Tieansuwan, said that all he ever saw after coming through immigration were signs for limousine services and the loud and brash attempts of their staff trying to coax him into using their services.

''I don't understand why illegal taxi and limousine services are allowed to solicit passengers wanting to go to the city even though there are police and security guards standing right in front of them,'' he said.

According to a source at Airports of Thailand (AoT), former AoT chairman Srisook Chandrangsu had changed the public transport floor plan a few weeks before Suvarnabhumi airport opened on Sept 28 last year.

The changed was criticised for favouring limousine operators who charge 700-1,500 baht for destinations within Bangkok and at least 2,500 baht for other destinations.

Hey am I getting confused here, are Thai Air still flying to UT from the new airport ?
My travel agent wouldn't let me book BKK to UT (Thai Air) and has made me book DMK to UT for my trip in early May.

Was that place designed by anyone who had actually been in an airport before?
I had the horrible experience of passing tghrough there last week for business. Once you get through security on the way out, there is nothing. No food, no shopping....a dead zone. One WC every 1/2 mile. I walked all the way back (about a Km) from the VTE Thai Airlines gate to security looking for a cup of coffee or something to eat (eat 6 AM) and was told by the guard that I would have to exit through security then come back through again if I wanted anything to eat. He laughed and said he got a lot of complaints about that. Stupid farang, what do they expect?
Is there any other airport in the world like that? Standard procedure for years has been to get through security as soon as possible and relax to eat and shop. Schipol has it right. Moscow is even more user freindly. What a bleak, terrible mess. I will know the next time to bring food with me when I go through security on the way out and just prepare to piss in the corner if I can't find a WC within a half mile. What a rathole!

I arrived at the new airport at 1:00 am approx 23/4/2007 on QF1. I was through immigration in 5 mins and had my bags 10 mins later. The meter taxis were still on the ground floor level ie 1 floor down from arrivals. I flew out 4:15pm 23/4 and apart from falangs at the check in not having paperwork and passports ready as they approached the counter it was smooth sailing. We are quick to critisise Thais but maybe next time at a airport look at the antics of your fellow falangs.

There is a snack bar thing right at the far end of the check in areas. Up near counter z if there is a counter z.

That was either a short stay in BKK or a long stay in the airport. Where did you fly off to?

The Return

Post by Garnet » April 25, 2007, 9:43 am

It sounds like my wife returned to Udon about 24 hours before your flight, wokkawombat -- if indeed it was to Udon that you flew from Bangkok. This was Jack's first visit back to Thailand since leaving the country for the first time in her life to come to Canada on May 10, 2006. She'll remain at her village home in Nong Soong until Canada grants her two sons visas to come here. But considering that we only sent away the visa application packages on the Wednesday before her early Saturday a.m. flight, she may be having one long visit -- it could be three months or more, for all I know!

It sure has been an extremely painful experience, trying to adjust to the bachelor life again after nearly a year with the dearest woman I've ever known -- outside of my mother, of course!

Jack flew with Nok Air to Udon; and she reported that when she went to weigh in, she was well over what was allowed -- as you might easily imagine, after being away from her family and friends for so darn long in a new world! So many things to bring back for distribution!

Fortunately, she told me that there was a German woman in line who hardly had any baggage, and who I believe was going to Udon to visit her brother. So the German woman assumed the excess weight onto her own quota allowance, and Jack never had to pay the 50 Baht per kilo penalty!

The kindness of strangers!

Not a very kind remark Stan.I have been the lucky receipient of Thai kindness on many varied occasions. Here in Udon, far more often than that received from farangs.

SUVARNABHUMI CLEAN-UP PROMISED

Police to crack down on black-plate taxis

SUTHIWIT CHAYUTWORAKAN

Police have vowed to rid Suvarnabhumi airport of unlicensed black-plate taxis and illegal tour guides within 15 days. Pol Maj-Gen Wut Liptapanlop, deputy chief of Police Region 1, said the new airport has been plagued with the problem of black-plate taxis overcharging passengers. It was reported that there are more than 30 groups operating unlicensed black-plate taxis at the airport, each with 10-100 cabs.

If this is allowed to continue, their operations will cause the state to suffer 300 million baht in lost revenue per year, he said.

To clean up the mess, Police Region 1 would seek the cooperation of other police units to crack down on unlicensed taxi drivers, he said, adding both criminal and civil laws would be strictly enforced against them.

If caught, drivers would face a maximum fine of 2,000 baht each and have their driving licences seized while the cab operators would face back-taxes. Police already know who are the operators. He said a crackdown would also be launched against illegal tour guides operating at the airport.

Pol Maj-Gen Chayut Thanataweerat, Samut Prakan police chief, said a court order would be sought to prohibit black-plate taxi drivers and illegal tour guides from operating at designated areas in the province
  Funny ,no mention of complaints by travellers for be inconvenienced, hassled or ripped off!Just that gov't is losing tax revenue
