Re: Baht What up with Dat?????
It would appear only the Coronavirus has the ability to meaningfully dent the mighty Baht!
Re: Baht What up with Dat?????
It just goes to show that there are a number of factors out there which can affect the currency exchange rate of a country and also that it is hard for any country to maintain a steady exchange rate trend. Yes Countries can hold their currency steady for a while but not forever.
Whether it be a natural disaster in the country or something such as this virus, that has the potential to impact on Thailand tourism numbers, it will eventually have some effect on the countries exchange rate. That, along with what happens in the USA with their currency, which one could say, is slightly unpredictable at this time.
I think with the TB the pressure was already there, but it just needed another kick start, such as the fear of the flow on effect to the already struggling Tourist numbers, to push the Baht to weaken.
This last month of January has seen the Baht move for 30.17 to 31.25, heading back to what it was at the start of June 2019. Not enough movement by my standards, but we will see what happens next month and whether this move upwards can be sustained and held above the 31.00 TB to the USD threshold.
I live in hope, of a weaker Thai Baht

Don’t we all
Re: Baht What up with Dat?????
Actually I wouldn't get too optimistic, the forecast or prediction for the end of this Year is pretty grim. Those supposedly in the know, are forecasting that the exchange rate for the Thai Baht to USD, will be sitting between 29.5 and 29.0 by the end of 2020.
I hope they are wrong

Me too. Not to sound greedy, I just needed up there between February 29th to March 16th. But I do hope for all those using USD the rates continue to climb. I have noticed that the euro and the pound are growing at a faster rate than the dollar.

Thai Baht: Just hang in their.
01 March 2019, the US to TB Rate was just about the same as today

It is looking better at TB 31.84 this morning, which is back to where it was on 22 January 2019
I have never wished a virus to hang around before, but in this case I hope it does to the end of this year
It has certainly had desired the impact on the Thai Baht. A 5% drop in the TB in the past 6 weeks

Re: Baht What up with Dat?????
For what it is worth I suggest searching for articles discussing why the U.S. dollar is becoming so strong. With stocks dropping, businesses being closed and the general suffering from the economy crisis, etc. there is a great movement to sell various assets to accumulate cash. Right now cash is in high demand.
As I have a small amount of silver I have been following the spot price of precious metals which are dropping rapidly in value. The spot price of silver had been holding around $17 or $18 earlier this year. I just now checked and today it dropped $1.68 to a spot price $13.11. Other precious metals are doing the same. This is an example of the rush to U.S. dollars.
My guess is the the U.S. dollar will continue to improve against the Thai baht in the short term.
