Quintessentially Isaan (Photos)
Re: Quintessentially Isaan (Photos)
those large fishing rafts are not nearly as plentiful as in years past... Here's a photo from 1974 down in Khumpawapi. Back then the Red Lotus Sea pretty much surround Khumpawapi with the exception of a causeway with the road on it

Was in town at the Tungsri ??? market early today, about 6.30 after the school run watching the missus sell her flowers, herbs, grafted fruit trees etc and thought this is quintessentially issan.
Place always has a fair and repeat local passing crowd and if you are an early riser and want really cheap produce then this is the place. They have everything.

Thanks for keeping the thread alive, Barney! The photos remind me of when we were in Panama and the temperatures plunged to a frigid 69F.

Barney, is that Tungsrimeuang market open every morning? It looks like a ตลาดนัด/market fair.....similar to what we see at Kilo 18 every Sunday.

Mrs. Shado says that many of the vendors are the ones who had spots at dtalat thetht sa baan saawng (ตลาดเทศบาลสอง) on Phosri Rd. and moved to Tungsrimeuang (basically across the street) during the Covid -19 outbreak in order to have more space and allow for social distancing. She says they operate at the same times as before the move.

Scholarships were awarded to a number students in the Northeast Technology Center. When I saw the photo, I thought of some of the t-shirts I've seen people wear.....Thai wearing shirts with English slogans and foreigners wearing t-shirts with Thai slogans........most probably unaware of what the t-shirt says. I'd guess the student who created the poster is having a laugh.
One government official at the ceremony said, "เราไม่ได้สร้างอัจฉริยะ แต่เรา สร้างคนที่สถานประกอบการอยากได้" which translates to "we don't create geniuses, but we make people that workplaces want."

Hey John: Enjoying your pics. The Udorn Hotel brings back memories of long ago. I spent my first night in Udorn at the Udorn Hotel in 1969 awaiting in-processing the next morning at the airbase. Hope ebetything is well at the VFW. Bill

This probably doesn't qualify as an Isaan dish......but it's weird enough to post here as if it does:
I stopped by Swenson's yesterday to get a few minutes relief from my mask. While I was waiting for my green tea cone, I saw this as an advertised special:
แตงโมปลาแห้ง
It reminded me of the first time I had green tea ice-cream.....40 years ago, Baskin Robbins, Gate 2/Maromi Street in Okinawa, I spotted a few people eating some, so I decided to give it a try. It's one of my favorites to this day.
This newest Swenson's dish, on the other hand, will have to wait. I'm not sure I'm ready to mix my dessert with my main meal.

When we were marooned in Texas, my wife made a grapefruit dessert.....with fried shallots, ginger, lots of chili, a tad salt/sugar.......mix it up.....gobble it up. Especially good as the heat of summer set in.

Checking out at Tops today, this caught my eye. I should have bought a bag......as I'd be interested in reading the ingredients. Allegedly 'strawberry' flavored.....but have to wonder....the name, the color
Checked the web for 'jelly poo poo'. Be warned. Don't go there.

^ Is it German by any chance?
Re: Quintessentially Isaan (Photos)
I spotted this worker at the statue circle, cutting through the asphalt with a ?24"? gas powered blade, in his bare feet, no goggles, no gloves, no hat, no flip flops even. His trustee assistant was wetting the blade with water as the cutting took place. I've been here long enough to know that safety isn't a priority in most lines of work......but this shocked me enough that I parked about 400m up the road and walked back to take a photo. t.i.t.

He’s not wearing a face mask either so that’s a bit reckless too
