cj, please.
Not everybody is a retirement tourist. Young Americans get two weeks vacation a year as a rule, but they socialise the other 49 weeks a hell of a lot more than oldies. Ever go to a University town at night and see Walt & Marjorie bopping on the dance floor, drinking Tequila slammers and getting home at 5:30 am? Ditto every other part of the world.
Younger people socialise, older folk drink warm milk and chocolate in front of the TV and go to bed before 9:30.

There are all kinds of social interaction and they are somewhat different as we grow older, we go from the disco to the home barbecue or pool party or street party, if we are the social type we continues just in a different format be it tourism with our friends or whatever. let's not forger Wuhan tourism. I don't think there is a one size fits all.
If it is to believed one socially active person created the biggest pandemic in our lifetime.

We cannot blame the government for taking every precaution they deem necessary. It was a fast spreading thing that no one knew anything about. HOWEVER, the fatality rate is much lower than expected and perhaps isolation of healthy people was not necessary or prudent. At this point the damage to the economy will cost more lives than the virus. At some point, isolation or not, most everyone will have been exposed and developed a natural immunity. If there is a second wave after many people who were isolated will go through this again with more devastating damage to the economy. I'm an old fart and in the high risk category and am willing to take my chances for the sake of putting the economy back on the tracks.

Glatt,
Thanks very much for that comment.
I'm thinking the same as you and that comment is most welcome.
Unfortunately, it seems that most posters on this forum are happy to let millions of people slide into poverty and have ruined lives, just so they can get a few more years on the planet.
I've never witnessed such selfishness.

I prefer that I live in a civil society, and not an economy.
Such societies won't sacrifice their citizens, of whatever age, so that others can have another cappuccino.

Flights are resuming in the near future , volunteers needed . We already had working poverty in the UK . Ok if you want to give your own lives that's fine and noble, asking others is hilarious.mickojak wrote: ↑May 30, 2020, 8:21 amGlatt,

Pardon ? I'm 56 years old and I'm not giving my life to prop up a system that benefits the rich while working couples slave away . Think of it this way ,if your recieving a pension or any other benefits as far as the government is concerned your better off dead ,that will be a benefit to the economy ,good for insurance companies ,good for share holders in fact good for any company that has ex workers on a pension. So don't waffle about what you would do ..do it , talk is cheap

This virus can kill the feeble and elderly. How many of those people would have died anyways? Colds and flu kill many people every year. Pneumonia is a killer and is usually brought on with having a cold. I think the danger was grossly exaggerated. Many unfortunate poor people live day to day and taking away their livelihood is cruel. Would you rather starve to death or fight the virus. Would the governments have changed their control methods if they had know that the fatality rate was very low? A second wave could easily happen again among the people who were isolated.

The government says there have been 49 verified deaths of NHS staff from Covid-19 during the pandemic, but it is clear that many others have died. The Guardian has recorded 200 deaths that have been reported in the news, but the true figure is likely to be higher because not all deaths will be in the public domain.
The number of health care workers who have tested positive for the coronavirus is likely far higher than the reported tally of 9,200, and U.S. officials say they have no comprehensive way to count those who lose their lives trying to save others.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released the infection tally Tuesday and said 27 health worker deaths have been recorded, based on a small number of test-result reports.

I can see both sides of the argument and it's a very fine dividing line knowing what course to take.
I,m 66 now (although I look much younger
) and have had my day but we have a 5 year old and I have to try to keep going till I,m 85 to get her through university !
I dread to think what her life would become if I wasn't around.
I think in Udon we are pretty safe, for the moment, but that could change with the opening up of the land borders and Chinese tourists coming into Bangkok by plane.
This virus is still very much around.... look at South Korea now....
South Korea has postponed the planned opening of more than 800 schools after a renewed outbreak of the Coronavirus.
In the city of Bucheon many cases were traced to a distribution centre owned by Coupang.
Health officials traced 82 infections to the facility with the virus found on workers shoes and clothes. Children of employees have tested positive for the virus.
