Where to buy tomato sauce/paste in Udon?

Hi,

This might seem like a silly question but I can't find tomato sauce and/or paste in Udon that's NOT SWEET... I found Thai tomato sauce in Big C and when I tried it, it was very sweet. All the tomato paste that I've bought so far (in tesco, big c or macro) taste too sweet. Any suggestions? We love eating pasta, chili, etc. but can't stand the sweet flavor.

Boy I don't know try Nissans across the street from the morning market, beyond that I think you would have to make it yourself

about the same problem here. There is the stuff in the jar, but I don't like it. Then there was the stuff in the can, not thai. This was passable with a little help. But now everyone is out of this! Not sure, but I think it was "prago" (sp?) in a can, not the jar. Maybe it was passable with added flavor of tin

So what I have been doing of late is canned tomatoes, canned tomato paste (I find it bitter) and added ingredients to taste.

We use the Prego, but in all honesty we put in a ton of mushrooms black olives, garlic, onions. It does not taste like Italian food at all.

Hmm, I have not found anything that tastes Italian by going out! I think I have tried all but one. But I did growup with a pot of it always on the stove!

The Heinze branded products including Spagetti and Tomato Sauses are available all over town and although I have no doubt that they are manufactured here in Thailand I don't think I could tell the difference between these and off the shelf items in Aus. The label says they are prepared to Italian recipies!?!?
Cambells Prego branded products are good also. Throw a chilli in to taste.

Thank you for all the info. I'll try out all the suggestions and let you know what works... maybe we can all enjoy normal-tasting home-cooked pasta

Try adding Oregano, it counters the sweet taste. It is an important
ingredient for all things Italian. If it is not available locally you can
use Basil and Bay leaves, just make sure to remove the Bay leaves
before serving as they are quite bitten when eaten.

greetings everyone ,, i have been a member for a few months now but this is my first post .. I'm coming to Thailand at the end of November and to Udon the second week of December,,, my point being, if there's anything i can get for anyone from UK i would be happy to get it ,, calm down don't go to mad ,,, but if you want tomato paste (puree) or Hienz 57 tomato sauce i can bring a few over ,,,,, or anything else your deprived of lol ,,,, so long as it's legal and not to heavy ... i come light and return heavy

Cadburys chocolate and the stuff you use when you wash your clothes wrongly ( I think its called colour run) comes in packets of two and is a blue liquid sachet and is fantsatic for rescuing mistakes in the wash

- all supermarkets sell it !

Thanks a million

The soap stuff is in a white packet - about the size of a cigarette packet and has two sachets of blue liquid inside. Its for when you cock up your washing and your best t-shirt ends up pink or something - this stuff will restore it to original - works every time (so far)
Called colour run - or restore or something like that - just check for the 2 blue sachets inside !

Chocolate seems to be ok as most of the time it is in air conditioned cabins or even better in the aircraft hold which is a fantastic refrigerator.
If you pass on the chocolate within a few hours of landing it will be fine but after that will require emergency treatment in the freezer compartment. It comes out in some odd shapes but is enjoyable just the same.
I even had some posted out to me once and after the week long journey it was like chocolate sauce LOL however after a few hours in the freezer it was fine - in fact it was bloody delicious

ok Paul i have the washing stuff,, you were close with the name ,,, Rescue - it .. colour run remover...made by ACDO here in rainy Bolton ,,, the chocolate I'll get nearer the time to make sure it's fresh as can be ,,,,

Thank You. You guys are too kind. Luckily I can order stuff from the States and we have enough visitors or make enough trips to get stuff that we need here. And I would never ask anyone to bring cans of tomato sauce here. But thank you anyway.
One thing that I am really starting to miss here (and I have not been here that long) that I can't order because it has to be refrigerated is FETA CHEESE. I saw it in Big C and it way way too expensive

I've noticed that the City Lodge have Greek Salad on the specials menu, it has the usual olives and feta cheese. It's made by the half greek/thai guy that works there.

At big C today, right of the heinz tomato sauce/ketchup and up one shelf was tomato sauce in a white bottle labelled "no added sugar".
