Cinnamon may help lower blood sugar

Post by BKKSTAN » June 21, 2007, 5:15 pm

Spoonful of cinnamon helps blood sugar stay down

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Adding some cinnamon to your dessert may temper the blood sugar surge that follows a sweet treat, a new study suggests.

Researchers at Malmo University Hospital in Sweden found that adding a little more than a teaspoon of cinnamon to a bowl of rice pudding lowered the post-meal blood sugar rise in a group of healthy volunteers.

The findings, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, add to evidence from past studies that cinnamon may aid in blood sugar control. However, it's too early to prescribe cinnamon as a therapy for diabetes, a disorder in which blood sugar levels soar because the body cannot properly use the sugar-regulating hormone insulin.

Dr. Joanna Hlebowicz and her colleagues based their findings on 14 healthy volunteers who had their blood sugar measured before and after eating a bowl of rice pudding; each volunteer was tested after eating plain rice pudding and after having a cinnamon-spiced version.

Post-pudding blood tests, which were taken repeatedly over 2 hours, showed that volunteers' blood sugar rose to a lesser degree when they had the cinnamon dessert.

One reason for the effect seems to be that cinnamon slows the rate at which food passes from the stomach to the intestines, according to Hlebowicz's team. Using ultrasound scans, they found that the volunteers showed a slower rate of "gastric emptying" when they ate the cinnamon rice pudding.

Whether people with diabetes should start spicing their diets with cinnamon remains to be seen. One small study, Hlebowicz and her colleagues note, found that when people with type 2 diabetes added cinnamon to their diets for 40 days, their blood sugar and cholesterol levels tended to dip.

On the other hand, a recent study found no such benefits among people with type 1 diabetes.

Further studies focusing on people with diabetes are still needed, Hlebowicz and her colleagues conclude.

A Thai friend advised me that Thais do not like cinnamon because it is commonly used to give medicine a "good" taste. They avoid it as they associate cinnamon with medicine, not food.

Cinnamon has a strong flavor. I use it together with cardomon and with mixed dishes Southern Thai Indian curries, Chinese Thai dishes especially beef and Duck Curry.

Broad statement. I know of a few Thai women that have gotten tourism visas from Bangkok to go to America in recent months. The visas were solely for tourism purposes.

Thais that show strong evidence that would indicate their imminent return to Thailand, plus monetary funds to cover their expenses while in the USA, should have no problem getting a tourist visa!whether or not cinnamon will help them or not, will probably not be a consideration

Well broad statement yes. I can only base on my personal. After 9/11 I have apllied for 26 work permits for Thai people no applicant was approved from a variety of financial and educational backgrounds all was a waste of time and money 2005 applied for my niece to visit Diisney World in Orlando Florida denied Disney World is no fun if kids can not bring, trip canceled.

The only success in 7 years of apply visa was my middle sister in 2000 to visit before 9/11. 2003 applied for older sister to visit She is Vice President of Telecommunication Company denied. No matter what proof you submit to Immigration US Immigration law states approval depends on the sole discretion of the interviewing officer no exceptions.

I was told Immigration is a priveledge not a right. Immigration is a pain for anyone having to go through it in any country not user friendly at all even in the worlds on super power US immigration is no better than Thai immigration only no one knows about it because their citizens do not have to experience it..

Now I do not apply for anyone or advise anyone based on my percentages most legal immigration is closed at the embasssy level either you jump a freighter like the Chinese which has unlimited supply for chinese restaurants but you have to pay the chinese mafia back 50,000 dollars now there are hundreds of Thai restaurants are for sell in America same reason no chefs because Thai people do not jump boats. The illegal immigration doors are still open fly to Mexico and walk accross like everyone else. But legal Immigration from an Embassy forget about it those doors are closed.
