Don't knock the NHS!!!

Back in the UK I use to moan every 3 months about having to pay a subscription charge for my "blood pressure" tablets. "A tax to keep me alive " I'd complain every quarter.

Little did I realise what a good deal I was getting. I've just gone and bought 6 months supply of tablets here in Udon and got stung for 6,100 Baht!!!!. Here's stupid me thinking moving to LOS would be cheaper.

Beware, staying alive here can be expensive!!!!! and do serious damage to your wallet!!!

Also that can be offset against the NI contributions, Tax, Council Tax... that you are saving on

Bet you didn't have to hand in the repeat prescription form (in person) and wait a couple of days to go and collect it like you do on the NHS.

If you live in Wales or Scotland now though prescriptions are free it's only the English who have to pay and prices increasing steadily!!

After typing that I was wondering if I can have one of your blood pressure tablets

You are whinging about 1,000 Baht per month to stay alive???

Try buying your meds in the States. You would pay a whole lot more there than what you pay here.

If you are buying name brand drugs - the prices will be higher here. Check for the generics. Usually much cheaper.

You might also want to consider going in and seeing a quack for a re-evaluation of your meds. Could be that the reasons you were taking the meds in the UK have disappeared or been reduced since moving here to LOS.

Galee, Doc is right about the generic meds. I need to take a pill for my acid reflux every day and in the States I was taking Nexium. Well, Nexium here was WAAAY over my budget to I asked the nice little lady at the pharmacy on the 2nd floor of Big C and she recommended a local generic. I tried them and they are just fine!!

Plus, I can get a 2 week supply of the generic for the cost of a single Nexium.

The other thiing is if you buy your meds at the hospital the costs will be higher, check out a few of the pharmacies and you probably can save a bit

I use the Pharamacy across from Bon Hoi Market Som Chacks, the costs are good and he has most anyhthing you want. or at least for what I need. You buy in volume and he will reduce the costs even further.

I agree - she is quite wonderful - and speaks quite good English. When you go in with symptoms, she will tell you only what you need - and not try to flog a lot of other stuff off on you.

She switched me to a different blood pressure medicine - 10 baht a pill - and it works wonderfully. So, instead of taking two pills a day I am now taking just one a day.

The pharmacy on the second floor of the Complex towards the Robinson's end is another alternative. He also speaks excellent English and can typically get you any type of drug that you need, want or desire. Can be a bit pricey at times - but bearable.
