China breaks its word over Hong Kong
In direct contradiction of its Treaty obligations, last week the Government of China arrested about 50 democracy supporters in Hong Kong last week. https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/hong-kong ... -1.5862721 and https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/hong-kong ... -1.5862721
China, along with the United Kingdom signed the Joint Declaration in which one clause reads, '"The current social and economic systems in Hong Kong will remain unchanged, and so will the life-style. Rights and freedoms, including those of the person, of speech, of the press, of assembly, of association, of travel, of movement, of correspondence, of strike, of choice of occupation, of academic research and of religious belief will be ensured by law in the [HKSAR]. Private property, ownership of enterprises, legitimate right of inheritance and foreign investment will be protected by law."[15]
Why is China not keeping its word? There should be international outrage over this issue.
Fortunately, some countries are stepping up and condemning China's actions in Hong Kong, https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/foreign-m ... -1.5867774

Re: China breaks its word over Hong Kong
I recall that the Hong Kong agreement allowed for 50 years of non-interference and Xi Jinping has chosen to fast-track it. So what has emboldened him?
I see a general apathy by the West, including Australia, that has allowed the Chinese to seize virtual control of the South China Sea. Regionally, nations have succumbed to China's divide and conquer strategy where China refuses to acknowledge international legal norms and pursues one-sided agreements on a nation-by-nation basis. This all bolstered by their empire-building masquerading under a benevolent belt and road initiative. When an impoverished "third world" country is continually unable to access essential development funding from the World Bank or IMF due to pre-existing debt (like Kenya) or unsuitable governments (like Laos), they are the low-hanging fruit for China.
Despite China's hegemony being a target of the latter part of Trump's presidency, I think more could have been done than the tariffs, trade embargoes and bans. They only served the MAGA myth without any regard for a global view on Chinese influence. The U.S. Navy's freedom of navigation cruises didn't do much of anything to check China's expansion. Neither did NOT following up on promises to supply materiel to SE Asian nations to strengthen their own armed forces.
Australia enjoyed the privilege of being a best friend of China as it fed their factories and steel mills with raw materials and the rest of the west lapped up the products made under license in China and exported from China. Then China's super heated economy crashed when the rest of the world embraced post-crash austerity. Now Australia is feeling China's wrath for FINALLY speaking up against their broadly illegal stifling of Hong Kong's freedom.

This argument will pervade Sino / Rest of the World for the foreseeable future, when the UK gave back Hong Kong the isl;and was not part of the deal on leasing, only the New Territories, but the UK gave back the whole lot. After that it was considered by many to be the nail in the coffin, short of going to war, the actions then are a done deal . Evenj those in HK , know that , the fact that China views everything in the long-term not short term, their actions will resound for decades after we have all gone to meet our maker .

That sums it up well. Britain really didn't give up Hong Kong Island, China said they were taking it and there was nothing the old cow, as T'eng Hsiao-p'ing called Thatcher, could do about it since she did not have U.S. support Now what is going to happen when China moves against Taiwan?

I am not surprised, it is only going to get worse. It is disgraceful that China is tolerated at all.Laan Yaa Mo wrote: ↑January 12, 2021, 4:45 amIn direct contradiction of its Treaty obligations, last week the Government of China arrested about 50 democracy supporters in Hong Kong last week. https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/hong-kong ... -1.5862721 and https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/hong-kong ... -1.5862721

Biden will do nothing about the Chinese, at least President Trump tried. You will see China become much more bold now with the new U.S. President.Laan Yaa Mo wrote: ↑January 12, 2021, 9:53 amThat sums it up well. Yes, but China seems to be in a hurry to speed up the process in violation of The Joint Declaration/Basic Law.Khun Paul wrote: ↑January 12, 2021, 7:04 amThis argument will pervade Sino / Rest of the World for the foreseeable future, when the UK gave back Hong Kong the isl;and was not part of the deal on leasing, only the New Territories, but the UK gave back the whole lot. Agree. Biden will follow Obama's line and make sure the media mentions FON exercises each and every time a US Navy ship goes cruising in the bits of the sea that China's has illegally staked already out as theirs. They will also make loads of verbal assurances of support for their friends and allies in the region but still wont approve the sale of much needed materiel to make countries like Vietnam and Indonesia better prepared to actively police their legitimate offshore claims.jai yen yen wrote: ↑January 12, 2021, 10:17 amBiden will do nothing about the Chinese, at least President Trump tried. Disagree. Trump didn't try ANYTHING meaningful with China apart from get on Xi's tits. Donald's head was too far up his own ass.
Re: China breaks its word over Hong Kong
Ah yes, but in truith that was expected, however, Hong Kopng was famed as a Free Port for trade, to destroy that would NOT be in Chinese interests, Taiwan is another matter entirely maybe a quid pro quo will happen, the world says nothing about HK and China forgets taking over Taiwan. We are only in fact talking about a few million people as opposed to a helleva lot more in Taiwan.Laan Yaa Mo wrote: ↑January 12, 2021, 10:48 amYes, but China seems to be in a hurry to speed up the process in violation of The Joint Declaration/Basic Law.Khun Paul wrote: ↑January 12, 2021, 7:04 amThis argument will pervade Sino / Rest of the World for the foreseeable future, when the UK gave back Hong Kong the isl;and was not part of the deal on leasing, only the New Territories, but the UK gave back the whole lot. At least Trump tried to fight China. Not many countries will, Canada is inviting the Chinese military to come over and train with them but then I never expected anything good from our socialist P.M.tamada wrote: ↑January 12, 2021, 11:32 amAgree. He also trusted the Chinese military to produce a vaccine together with Canada. China left him in the dust over that one too. Now he is permitting the family of that Hua Wei executive to visit her in Vancouver. I wonder if China will allow the families of the two Michaels to visit them in their Chinese cells.

i just popped in this topic. its just weird. why China shouldnt act "bold", whatever that means. They are not on the leash of America. They can be "bold" if they want to. If they werent "bold" they still would be abused by the usa as a cheap manufacturer country.jai yen yen wrote: ↑January 12, 2021, 10:17 amBiden will do nothing about the Chinese, at least President Trump tried. Taiwan? Sure let them rule themselves. But i can understand that China is nervous about an island nation so close by the mainland that is so heavely under the control of the usa.
How about the usa wrecking Cuba, another independent island nation, for decades now? Thanks to these crippling blockades the people of Cuba live in economic misery for decades now.
Hong Kong? Sorry but it is China. Legally and ethically. It was only temporarely under Brittish rule. You can rent a house for a longt tme but it still isnt your house.
Intelectual property theft? hilarious. Most intelectual property exchange was and is legal and ethical, nothing forced. "if you want to do busines in our country andbenefit from cheap labour , you have to share your knowledge." Thats VERY FAIR.
The Uzguirs? Well, just like the usa and the west, China has a problem with muslim extremism and terrorism. The usa's "solution" is to simply invade other countries, bomb cities, start wars. China's solution is to put muslims in "education camps". I am not sure which option is the best...
Anyway, its all a political game and we all have to be anti China but its all for the benefit of the usa. Fearmongering. Thats why Canada, and Europe, are less anti China, and ONLY bc they fear being punished by the usa.
China in just a few decades has turned the poverty in their country, in an economic success. Billions of people have been lifted from poverty into prosperity. Now thats pretty good and only a smart country can do that. So instead of following the usa in bullying China, we should more look to the facts and whats happening in China.
Erm, lastly, the last years in the usa culminating in last weeks dramatic events, is very telling about the usa. And daily death rate of 4000 ppl in the usa? sounds like a hopeless ----- country to me. Lots to do for the good ppl in the usa to rebuild their country, and one thing instead of bullying china better look and learn from china.

Anyone watched John Pilger's film on the war on China?

Re: China breaks its word over Hong Kong
Chopperjoey, you seem to have missed the point. China has broken the international treaty they signed over the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Rather than acting in a bold manner, the PRC acted illegally. The significance is that it demonstrated China cannot be trusted to keep its word. You need to look at the Joint Declaration/Basic Law and focus on this clause: 'The current social and economic systems in Hong Kong will remain unchanged, and so will the life-style.
I am not sure why you are going off topic to discuss the U.S.A. It just seems like an attempt to deflect focus from the issue at hand.

Re: China breaks its word over Hong Kong
The U.S. has nothing to do with the fact that China is a cancer spreading around the world. Human rights violations, pollution, covid and the failure to address it in the beginning along with their lies. Chinese citizens arrested for trying to expose the truth. We have a world wide disaster happening right now because of China. They are a corrupt communist dictatorship with big plans which will not be good for the world. If you think China is a great country you are sadly mistaken.chopperjoey wrote: ↑January 14, 2021, 6:11 pmi just popped in this topic. its just weird. why China shouldnt act "bold", whatever that means. Re: China breaks its word over Hong Kong
Trump did not do anything with China except impose tarrifs, which the US consumer paid for, then was given to the US farmers. It accomplished nothing. It's funny how much business he and his daughter, Ivanka, do in China, yet none of his or her merchandise had tariffs imposed on them.
