how things will play out depend on the Western nations showing some spine and immediately reimposing the sanctions that existed before the military granted political power to the NLD.. But, money talks and the huge amount of western investment dollars that flowed into Myanmar after sanctions were lifted before likely will prevent any heavy response by the "democratic" countries..

As for China they could give two hoots about who runs the country if their 25 year One Belt One Road goals are met. They've got dams, rail, road, pipeline and power infrastructure projects in Myanmar..
Hi and what "Spine"

You would struggle to find a western nation these days that had any Political "Backbone" :-k :-k Maybe the Netherlands

Sanctions... wow what novel idea ? Sanctions are a sign of desperation.. Recently the EU imposed sanctions on Cambodia, what has been the results ? Maybe the White Supremacists, Racists from the USA, UK and Australia could send their guinboats.
Interesting article written before the Myanmar coup. I know the article refers to the European experience but i believe it would also apply to the USA.

Then again you could live in a country like this

If you don't want to watch it all start from the 38 minute mark.

Watched that last night. A shocking basket case of a country on Myanmar's western border. No wonder the Rohingya don't want to go there.

Police using water canons, the usual escalation. The army chief went on national television to lie to the people. However, the army have suggested that live firing is an option if the protests don't end soon. I can't see this ending well at all.

Yes, don't mess with the Tatmadaw, they don't fool around. Back in August 1988 longtime Dictator Ne Win warned rebellious monks and students that when the Tatmadaw shoots, they shoot to kill. They even shot into hospitals killing nurses and doctors who were looking after wounded protesters.

In 1970 after being posted to Hong Kong and served in the New territories, The Gurkha Regiment also in the same camp often said to me that the Burmese Army was even then a force that would do unspeakable things with impunity, almost akin to the Viet Cong .
So it is no surprise what has occurred, I wait with bated breath and HOPE that their blood lust will not show itself, as little insecure men with power always use Violence as a way to obtain their demands .

This is from a Burmese Facebook poster: 'February 7 at 2:31 PM ·
An alarming news have emerged that staffs from Union Election Commission (UEC) in Naypyidaw of Myanmar are being held at gunpoint by a group of soldiers from Myanmar Military.
The UEC staffs are being forced to make a signed statement to declare the election is fraudulent so that the military regime can justify the coup by presenting that statement to the United Nations(UN).
The UEC staffs have also been told that soldiers are authorised to shoot if the staffs do not comply.
This is an attempt from military regime to forge a false information by threatening the life of the citizens. This violates the human rights, is unlawful, and should be condemned.
UEC staffs want to share this news with the world.

^ The Burmese army preaching about peace, harmony, democracy and rule of law. That's a bit rich, eh?

Stories and images of police firing on protesters have been surfacing. Despite frequent internet throttling and blocking of 4G networks, the protesters have been using a Bluetooth-enabled app called Bridgefy to communicate.

The rot has started, The Military has started using not only Rubber Bullets ( probably aimed deliberately ) and according to some as yet un-named Doctors , Live Bullets .
This will in effect do two things, start to make Make Myanmar a pariah state and make the people even angrier. It is downhill from here ..

Khun Paul, the Tatmadaw has done this a number of times before. It happens over and over again. The world forgets...the country is no longer a pariah state, and foreign investment flows again.

Russia cites "human rights" as it backs China's revised stance on the Myanmar coup.

"... According to The Irrawaddy, the Russian diplomat asked the international community for “practical assistance to the new authority of Myanmar to fulfill their obligations, including in the field of human rights” instead of criticizing the regime. ..."
