Might have missed some of the experts on here but the hull would have split at the depths it was found that's not to say thats the reason it sank. Until there is a full investigation nothing is off the table as far as I'm concerned everything is heresay and speculation ill then

Interesting scenario and much speculation as to why it split, until recovered nothing is off the table as the reasons. RIP to the Sailors and the outcome we will just have to wait .

^ To be honest Dubbeldoo, it's a tough call between your submarine-by-Wiki knowledge base or Whistler's. Right now you have the edge since Whistler reckons +10 m doesn't mean squat when to the professional submariner it means 364.6 psi versus 379.2 psi.

Agree it makes a whole 4% difference, this is junior high school physics. That's without any safety margin that would always be taken into consideration. In other words three fifths of FA. The sub went down in 600 or 700 metres of water, it is hardly relevant in that case

What is more, that was the specs when the sub was new. After 40 years, metal fatigue would have come into play and it safe depth is certainly a good deal less than the 'as new' certified spec.

As the fourth non-submariner in this pissing contest, I concur with Whistler and reckon the sub was beyond it's safe use-by date. The manufacturers minimum specs including TEST versus NORM operating depth are as pertinent and relevant as the price of durian.
This is what happens when you decide to save money after your car is out of warranty and you start using Somchai and Nong or buying stuff on lazada and doing it yourself.

As I worked on most of the Royal Navy Sub's we have delivered from Trafalgar Class, S class, Trident, and Astute class, even Non Nuclear such as Upholder Class let me give you my opinions on this Accident and the loss of the Indonesian Submarine. From what has been given out in my opinion the integrity of the pressure Hull Welds failed due to more likely age and corrosion, plus fatigue. The Steel used to form the pressure hull will not be a high quality yield we use today. As for upgrades yes even though it was 40 + years old they could only upgrade weaponry, Sonars, Telecommunication upgrades. Structural upgrades to a pressure hull is not possible only casings or Hydroplanes rudders etc. I don't believe the Indonesian Sub hit its Crush depth otherwise it would have shattered like USS Thresher that exceeded its crush depth as seen by Bob Ballard when he found it. An Explosion in a Torpedo tube is possible as in The Kursk loss could happen. but that's not What happened here. I believe sadly the submarine dived and a Mechanical fault along with a complete Electrical failure resulted loss of power that Doomed the Sub and her Crew. As for operational numbers Depths are Classified and it is at best only released what people want to hear.

It still is a volenteer for The Submarine Service as its not the normal jack Tar Once submerged you can circumnavigate the globe underwater its not unusual to work your days out with what food you get in the mess ie Saturdays curry night or sunday full roast. No windows or fresh air till you surface. For the ones who think they know what dephs and limitations they can withstand stand the Titanic sits at over 12.000 ft yet still remains recognizable with a riveted hull. It did not crush like a submarine like the Thresher or USS Scorpion which imploded 450 ft past its crush depth of 1,950 ft. Scirpion sits shattered at 9,800.ft.

The water pressure flooding inside a sinking ship mostly equalises the external pressure so unless it's a sealed machine space or cargo hold, most wrecks on the sea floor look shipshape. The submarine is a sealed compartment and eventually the huge external pressure prevails when one sinks.

Water is allowed to flood into the Submarine Doodoo its called Ballest. Flood the Ballest Tanks it sinks. pump it out it Surfaces.Tam's is correct a submarine is Basically a sealed tube which is pressurized same as an A jet liner is. put a hole in it and Bang.
