driving license renewal

Post by fantom » May 12, 2021, 5:39 pm

Renewed my Thailand D/L today after this procedure:- (1) brief visit to Transport Office, Nong Han, to ask about requirements, wife given details of smartphone APP for 1 hour education. (2) visit local Hospital to get Medical Certificate (checked weight, waist, Blood Pressure, Oxygen Concentration, showed doctor the medications I take). Wife tells me that Transport Office told her the certificate valid only for same day or next day. (3) back to Nong Han with medical certificate, passport, yellow book, current D/L, photocopies of passport ID page, permission to stay in Thailand page, yellow book, current D/L -both sides. Was asked for Thailand ID card (pink card), but wife persuaded them that our Amphoe now doing only Births and Deaths as they don't want their office busy during Covid. She showed them the APP on her phone affirming that person with ID number (from my yellow book) has done the 1 hour education, told them she translated for me. I wrote my name and signature on a form, took colour blindness test, photograph taken, paid 500 baht, new D/L issued, valid 5 years (until 89th birthday!). Wife was told that they now issue D/L to foreigner ONLY IF it is renewal of existing Thailand D/L, not a new one. Tom

I recently used Nong Han transport office for a renewal of licenses .. very quick and easy experience...and only approx 20 mins away

You are correct fantom... they recently announced that they are only processing renewals of existing expired licenses no new license applications due to covid restrictions ... this applies to both Thais and Expats.

Thank you tom.

Happy that DM confirmed the "only renewals" edict at Nong Han.

Next mystery is why they insisted on a "Pink Card" despite your having a yellow book.

FMD - seems to change week to week.

The PC has the holders picture on it whereas the YB is faceless? Maybe eliminates a two-step paper-shuffle (or photocopy) somewhere along the arcane procedure.

The yellow book only confirms address the pink card confirms identity.

It’s precisely the same for a Thai where they need blue book and ID card.

As does the passport - which is mentioned in the OP.

Yes a bit strange .. i wasnt asked for anything other than what i handed in

Medical cert
passport
old licenses
letter from immo confirming address (do not have pink id or yellow book)

Signed two pc A4 paper 1 for each license
traffic light / colour blind test first floor
45 min vid first floor

Payment done n out the door in 1half hrs.

About 2 weeks after i had done mine they announced no new licenses would be processed only renewals of exsisting expired ones .. they also do documentation for modifications to vehicles ..ie fitting a box on a pick up or carry boy , plus MOT testing .. no long Qs out the gate like Nong Soong Transport office.

Not strange at all, almost all offices will accept
Yellow book (proof of address) and Pink card (proof of ID) or immigration letter and passport

You also always need your passport for proof of kind of permission to stay so the DLT office knows if you can have a 2 year or 5 year license.

It could be each office applies the rules as they see fit , there was an announcement in the news by the transport dept , that until further notice no further new licenses to be done , As for the pink ID card , i renewed one of my licenses in december , passport yellow book, med cert ,on producing my pink ID card ,they said only bring Pink ID card next time as no need for passport or yellow book ,Kumphawapi office ,

But the passport doesn't mention address.

As I suggested, the possible saving of cross-checking one extra bit of documentation or the reduction of one photocopy may be considered supremely important by some paper shuffling desk jockey (but not all of them).

YMMV

No visa gives you permission to stay.

All visas suggest to the immigration office processing your entry the time he should give you on your permission to stay stamp.

The requirements to check your permission to stay stamp is that unless you have the correct Non-O / Non-B entry or long term (1year) extension you only get the 2 year temporary license not the 5 year license.

You are misunderstanding the passport requirements

Yellow book (address)
Pink card (identity)
Passport (which license you can get 2/5 year)

Or
Immigration letter (address)
Passport (identity)
Passport (which license you can get 2/5 year)

Perhaps I am missing something here.

The OP said he presented at the Nong Han Transport Office:

- passport (which covers identity)
- yellow book (which covers address)
- current drivers license ( which presumably was issued by previously presenting the above)

Why did they ask then for a pink card, but were apparently then OK to let it slide?

I certainly didn't need one when my previous 2 licenses were issued - using just my yellow book and passport. This was also at Nong Han.

No it isn’t. It allows you to present your self to an immigration officer. You are not normally in Thailand until you pass immigration. The secured area is not officially a normal area in Thailand. Without a permission to stay stamp of some duration you can’t leave the airport or boarder except in police or immigration detention.
