Hammerheadfred wrote:When I was there in the '70s the Thai sound track (The Sound of Music was something else in Thai) was a separate recording synchronized to the movie and most theaters, for an extra fee, had headphones or a booth to listen to the orignal sound track. I guess from this tread they don't do this anymore.
Yeah, Fred, I remember those theaters, too. Saw some real classics with both Thai and English soundtracks available. Bruce Lee films packed them in as well as Clint Eastwood's spaghetti westerns and the Dirty Harry run. Some good Chinese kung fu ones with David Chiang, Ti Lung and B Lee. Another movie with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton sticks in my mind where Ms Taylor for some reason in the dialogue shouted, "Yet, yet, yet!". All of the Thais in the theater exploded in raucous laughter. Asked the TGF later and she explained what the word meant in Thai.

Those theaters are long gone with the advent of DVDs and VCDs available everywhere, including pirate copies of the latest flicks a week or less after they are released. The theater complex at the mall seems to be the only place around Udon now that shows any movies at all, mainly in Thai.

The website is written in English and Thai. Look in the right column and select Udon Thani, this will give you what's playing today.

I do'nt understand why they not have english subtitles, i think i could put up with the Thai soundtrack as long as i could read and understand what the film was about.

Just guessing HB,but the Thai movies are cheaply made productions with the exception of a few!Prices of theater tickets are really low compared to other countries. There are not enough customers to support the costs! The extra cost would not be supported by the Thai audience if they had to raise ticket prices!

I tried to explain to my TGF that in most countries they show foreign films with the original soundtrack and have subtitles for the locals. She just kept saying, "This Thailand, so movie talk Thai." ](*,)

I can't stand it back home when a foreign movie is dubbed in English. I think it really changes the impact of the movie, but over here it's standard procedure for everything to be dubbed in Thai. :-#

Works both ways :? Rented a film called "Fly Boys" last month and got the English version with Thai sub-titles 8)
The wife wasn't interested even though I told her it was a damn good film to do with pilots in WW1.
What came on Udon Cable a few days later?
You got it! "Fly Boys",No sub-titles,all in Thai, and who sat through it loving every minute?
You got it,The Wife!
