Cataract Surgery in Udon

Over the past 4 months I notice my right eye vision is getting more "cloudy", still very good but I'm thinking it could be a Cataract.

Any recommendations for an eye clinic to repair the condition in Udon?

Monk, I highly recommend Udon Optical. It's a Chinese-Thai family owned and operated business that's been around for years. Manit is the licensed and uni graduated optometrist, and he has the latest equipment and does a thorough examination. He speaks excellent English and he is very fair and will not rip you off. I have used him for 9 years and have referred many of my friends to him who have all been satisfied. Prices are very reasonable and he will show you your options and let you make an informed decision on what is best for you. His phone number is 042 223 068 and 042 340 224. No appointment is necessary. Directions: heading west on Phosri Road he is 50 meters before the 2nd circle and on the left side of Phosri. BD if you require lasik treatment, my wife went to srinakarin hospital in kk a few years ago. Very clean, modern and helpful. Only downside was the need to go for checkup every day for a week ........ then again that could be seen as a benefit and doing a good job

If it turns out to be cataracts unfortunately LASIK (or any other brand of laser treatment) won’t work

Cloudy vision in one eye can also be Glaucoma or Optical Neuritis. I had the same and recently went through eye examinations and tests, including an MRI, at the AEK and have been diagnosed with the latter. Make sure you have a thorough examination. As far as I know Optometrists check and test your eyes but refer you to an Opthalmologist if there are anomalies. May be worth going straight to an Opthalmologist. We'll that's what my Optomotrist told me to do

Any bright flashes around the periphery of your vision BD? That and 'cloudy' vision and the appearance of new 'floaters' could indicate the start of a detached retina.

There's an older thread that recommends a eye specialist who works at the local hospitals but also has their own business in that row of shop houses west of the entrance to the airport, right near DM's favorite 7 eleven.

I'm pretty sure it's not Glaucoma as I get myself tested for that every 2 years or so in Aus. (My Mother had it, effected her perifical vision).

I thoroughly recommend getting corrective vision lenses installed (?) if you go through with sorting out your cataracts.

I didn’t have cataracts but went for new lenses about 5-6 years ago & I’ve not looked back since (pun intended)

I recommend Dr Phanuwat who is the ophthalmic surgeon that Bangkok Hospital calls in for eye surgery. He also has his own clinic on Prajak Sillapakom, just west of the 5-way, right beside the best breakfast place in town. Speaks good English too.

Thanks Tam, I did not follow up with the complaint as my vision cleared over a week or so and has not re surfaced.

The AEK thread prompted me to update this one!

Not strictly Udon as I'm a Khon Kaener but, I needed surgery and visited a couple of hospitals in KK after recommendations from friends. I also wanted my vision corrected so I could do away with glasses which I have worn since I was 7 years old.

Ram hospital quoted me 90k plus per eye after a consultation lasting about 20 mins. I then went to Srinagarind where I underwent more thorough testing and was quoted between 43k and 49k. The (lady) doctor was recommended by a couple of friends and explained everything brilliantly so, I went along with that one - a Yorkshireman can never ignore such a price saving anyway!

Had the first eye done 10 days ago and, so far so good. The aftercare has been excellent and the price has come in at just over 43k including the initial consultation which was over 3k.Absolutely no pain during the procedure.

Only downside is that Srinagarind is, I believe, a public hospital so, waiting areas are often crowded and a little dated. Upstairs in the operating room everything is modern and pristine.

Booked in a week on Saturday for the 2nd one.

An American chap I am working with in Bali is planning a visit to Thailand to visit an old friend up in KK. This guy is fed up of prescription spectacles and his buddy has him sold on 'cheap' eye surgery while he's here. I know from experience that Srinagarind is truly Isaan's center of medical excellence... you just have to take a queue number! If you can give a name for the lady doctor, that would help him get through the crowds when he gets here next month.

PS: I think Old Grumpy mentioned in another thread that there's a VIP-style reception at Srinagarind. Maybe somewhere to check-in and wait before being whisked to the front of any queues?

The doctors name is On Siri. I'm pretty sure that she just works Saturdays at Srinagarind. We went to the main hospital reception desk to make an appointment for the first consultation. The surgery is also carried out on a Saturday pretty much as soon as you want. She leaves a minimum of 2 weeks before doing the 2nd eye

Thanks for the heads up re VIP but, I enjoy people watching so didn't mind waiting my turn. The reception area has a blood pressure monitor so I passed the time checking it out when a pretty nurse went past.

Final (I hope!) update on this.

I had my 2nd eye done on Feb 10 and went for my sign off last Saturday. All fine and long distance vision is great. I do need glasses for reading but was told this would be the case due to my severe astigmatism. Playing golf and jogging again now so, life is pretty much back to normal apart from that I can see what I'm doing when I go for a pee in the night.

Sam, what type of surgery did you have, and how many visits did this require for each eye?

I am asking because of statto's comment above, re daily checkups - although that was for Lasik treatment.

If daily is required, obviously getting it done in KK is not feasible from Ban Dung.
