Yeah, Fred, I remember those theaters, too. Saw some real classics with both Thai and English soundtracks available. Bruce Lee films packed them in as well as Clint Eastwood's spaghetti westerns and the Dirty Harry run. Some good Chinese kung fu ones with David Chiang, Ti Lung and B Lee. Another movie with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton sticks in my mind where Ms Taylor for some reason in the dialogue shouted, "Yet, yet, yet!". All of the Thais in the theater exploded in raucous laughter. Asked the TGF later and she explained what the word meant in Thai.Hammerheadfred wrote:When I was there in the '70s the Thai sound track (The Sound of Music was something else in Thai) was a separate recording synchronized to the movie and most theaters, for an extra fee, had headphones or a booth to listen to the orignal sound track. I guess from this tread they don't do this anymore.
Those theaters are long gone with the advent of DVDs and VCDs available everywhere, including pirate copies of the latest flicks a week or less after they are released. The theater complex at the mall seems to be the only place around Udon now that shows any movies at all, mainly in Thai.
