Re: Corona Virus / COVID-19 Important Information
The only thing that is almost certain in a new variant that becomes the prevalent version is that it’s more infectious.stattointhailand wrote: ↑November 28, 2021, 1:44 pmInteresting ......... I haven't been a doctor for 30 years, but I could have guessed the new variant would be worse for the elderly. those suffering other major problems and the unvaccinated ......... perhaps I missed my "calling" in life
If it’s going to be more or less deadly than the previous versions is chance.
In fact if it is very much worse it’s likely to die out as it’s victims don’t survive to pass it on.
It’s equally likely (possibly more) to be a milder variant as then it’s victims stay in the general population and spread it round.

3 very accurate points STWW ... the latter seems to be happening as the symtoms are very mild some infected didnt know they had it so carried on life as the new newer normal and passed it on .. being called "in community" infections.sometimewoodworker wrote: ↑November 30, 2021, 8:16 amThe only thing that is almost certain in a new variant that becomes the prevalent version is that it’s more infectious.stattointhailand wrote: ↑November 28, 2021, 1:44 pmInteresting ......... Things are looking grim and after 2 years we could so easily be back to square one.

1 inaccurate point SWW the fact if it is worse it will die out,
being that unless it is about a million times worse it wont die out

If you are going to dispute a point, do use the exact quote, what I said was
I would class a million times worse as “ very much worse” wouldn’t you?if it is very much worse it’s likely to die out
So rather than pointlessly calling my statement as inaccurate you are in fact supporting that point, no?

A sobering read, particularly for those who persist in believing they are better off taking their chances staying un-vaxxed, and happy to risk that their body will cope if they catch COVID.

Re: Miscellaneous COVID-19/Corona Virus Discussion, Questions, etc.
My recollection is that MERS was the worst of the bunch. The mortality rate was so high, it effectively killed itself (all hosts).
So far, it looks like omicron isn't a MERS. Maybe not even a delta but like the flu, a targeted vaccine is required due to its R>2 factor.

Re: Miscellaneous COVID-19/Corona Virus Discussion, Questions, etc.
The biggest problem is that if Omicron is a "mild" form of the virus, there will be hundreds of people wandering about with "the snivells" infecting everyone else and not realising it's covid. Even if only one in 20 cases gets to the "serious" stage that can still be catastophic for the hospitals. If you don't feel well you stay home and don't infect anyone, but if you feel fine your out and about spreading it

Re: Miscellaneous COVID-19/Corona Virus Discussion, Questions, etc.
If it turns out to be a mild form then 1 in 20 getting to be serious cannot be the figure as the current estimate by age varies from 0.4% in under 40s to 9.2% in the over 60s hospitalised & those figures are over estimated as the total number of cases is under reported.stattointhailand wrote: ↑November 30, 2021, 6:17 pmThe biggest problem is that if Omicron is a "mild" form of the virus, there will be hundreds of people wandering about with "the snivells" infecting everyone else and not realising it's covid. So it’s more likely to average 1 in 300 reported cases if it’s a mild form, probably 1 in 500 in the significantly higher number of actual cases.
Now even those numbers are not at all good and there is not enough information yet to know how serious the new variant is & it’s looking as if a tweaked vaccination may be required.

And now apparently there's the special forces 'stealth' variant of omicron.
Scientists find ‘stealth’ version of Omicron that may be harder to track
"The variant is still detected as coronavirus by all the usual tests, and can be identified as the Omicron variant through genomic testing, but probable cases are not flagged up by routine PCR tests that give quicker results. ..."

The good news is that though the Omicron variant is much more transmissible so far it seems to be putting many many fewer people in hospital

Re: covid cases udon
Talking about Vaccinations, anyone any knowledge if any at all about the possibility of Booster shots, we will all require them I feel ion about 2-4 months time depending on when we got our second jab.
Is the Thai government mulling this or will we have to source it ourselves. Ju=dging by the info coming out of the UK maybe a Mix and match would be benificail , Booster for example, AZ or Moderna.
