Not sure i think louk.chin is processed meat formed into balls what they put in noodle soup .. it can also be skewered then dipped in a sweet chilli sauce .. dont think much meat involved made from left over bits n bobs like ears to gues etc ..originates from.Vietnam and made in huge quanties in the soi opposite the Karen hotel on wattanapong rd ..

See that! During GI Daze, we called them monkey balls. It left nothing to the imagination about what you were eating.
My favorite noodle soup slurp has monkey balls. They're vacuum packed and kept in a fridge until each customer orders. I've never had a problem with the place.....still going strong after 26 years. That said, I've had soup with dodgy monkey balls on occasion elsewhere. At the first hint of something being off, I'll politely pay and leave.

Monkey balls .. quite apt as its open to conjecture as too what exactly goes into the pot... i prefer Gaolao beht which is duck soup loaded with veggies no noodles but always without the monkey balls... located on lo e junction 30m.from.my office Nong Hin duck noodle shop ..superb

I think in Thai language louk is a classifier for anything round shaped ..like eggs ..how many eggs gee louk ..chin is a piece of something ..how many pieces ..gee chin

Indeed .. there are numerous classifiers and also tones fir speaking thecword correctly ..louk is a classifier also it means young child ..louk chai / etc .. its pronounced in a different tone therefore different meaning.

Another classifying word used is fong ..khao dow song fong ..2 fried eggs ..... khai dow gee fong how many fried eggs

One of the craziest words in Thai is Khao .. depending how its spoken tonely it has many different meanings.

I like to think some knowledge has sunk.in over the past 20 yrs n some early Thai classes helped

Back to louk chin .. huge business a d a great way to use up all the scrag ends from a kill...im.sure Mr Ramsey would have a few expletives regarding this SE Asean delecacy

Yes sausage the world over is more or less the same raw ingredients as louk chin but the traditional sausage has more herbs n spices and not as rubbery, hotdog style is dead on louk chin..

No sneers or looking down on Thais from me ..

i was a Chang drinker and the lesser spotted ex SAS CIA are found in great numbers in Soi Samphan on any given day.

ลูกชิ้น is the word for meatball.......and ลูก is the numerical classifier for children, round fruit, balls, midsized hard round objects......so you could say ขอจานลูกชิ้น 10 ลูก (I want a plate of 10 monkeyballs, please......I want a plate of meatballs, 10, please)

I've on occasion come across one of those "How do they do it" youtube videos. If it's anything to do with things like hotdogs, sausages (Western or Eastern), I'll pass it by. I'd prefer not to hear about the possible demise of Jimmie Hoffa!

I enjoyed gowlao today .. lots of veg bamboo shoots beef meat and i chucked in a few beef flavoured monkey balls for good measure .. onky thing missing was a nice crusty french stick so had khaopow instead ... 45bt

I wore normal attire no cammo and didnt stare at other patrons who were mostly eating duck noodle soup.

I shall try the fish option tomorrow

Ha! Learning Thai? I remember being blootered in Hong Kong and telling some Vietnamese gentlemen that I was fluent in their language.

Stand easy Private Earnest...you make a point , actually using the language daily is the best and quickest way to pick up a language .. being able to understand what Thais are saying around you is great . until they twig on and start to speak quicker in a more localized dialect .. pretty standard practice and common for expats to use slang around locals as well.

Hats off to anyone who can or is learning to read n write Thai .. speaking and listening some is where im at .. one look at the squiggly and that was enough for me.
