Unfortunately, Thailand's official transliterating system isn't one that's used 100% even by government agencies.....unlike Pinyin or Wade Giles for Chinese. But, according to the official system, it's Krung (Thep).

In Thai, ask 100 Thais who live in Bangkok, "Where do you live?" (คุณอาศัยอยู่ที่ไหน) and I'd dare say 99 or 100 would respond "I live in KrungThep (อาศัยอยู่ที่กรุงเทพ)"
In the 25 years we've been here, I've yet to see a license plate say "Bangkok".......in Thai or English

บางกอก (baang gaawk) is interesting. I didn't realize that it was an ancient name referring to "the place of or the area of olives". Lots of Thai places have the name บาง (baang). Bang Sue, Bang Pu, Bang Phun, Bang Bua Tong, Bang Mueang etc. I knew that มะกอก (ma gaawk) was olive in Thai but I never connected that with a location (place of olives) = บางกอก (baang gaawk). The name Bangkok has a whole new meaning for me now.
