I heard that a probable design fault was also the reason, where missiles waiting to be deployed in the surface mounted tubes were also stored below decks next to the hull , that would mean any penetration of the hull near them would also cause the so-called inert missiles to explode making a possible minor hole in the side a gigantic hole .

When this ship was initially commissioned small missiles had as yet be invented to do what they can now and NO thought was given to the location of this old ship , why a cruiser was moored so near to enemy land is beyond me as well.

Yep, that was really dumb of the captain to drop anchor when you are in the middle of a combat zone. ;)

HMS Hood, the flagship of the then British war fleet, was built at a time when the extra steel needed for armour was at a premium so the thinner armour under the wooden upper deck left her vulnerable to high-angle shells and bombs. One of the theories is the Bismark lobbed some high-incidence hot steel that penetrated into the ship's armoury amidships and ignited the munitions stores. Sank in about three minutes, horrendous loss of life. Her WWI design was already obsolete and the time pressure of WWII meant that vital topsides armour upgrades were never done.

The Russians had all the time in the world to refit Moskva properly but I would guess the billions of roubles required was already lodged in someone else's private bank accounts. The ship, originally named Slava, was already 44 years old. In commercial shipping, keeping a vessel in class certificate and seaworthy is generally abandoned before they're 30 years old. Thus the myth of Russian firepower and naval prowess is even more far fetched than the Soviet claims of such. You can make any ship look good with a crew armed with chipping hammers and paint buckets. I worked on an older Russian survey vessel in Brazil for a year and the budget for materials needed for continuous chipping and painting was only exceeded by their demand for cabbage and sour cream. The boat looked great and the borscht was to die for but the rest of her was pretty rubbish

Hi Tam
You are pretty correct in all your points but the Hood was designed as a Battle Cruiser. She could outgun most of her peer opponents and had the speed to run from anything that could cause real damage to her. Since WW1 she had been modified many times even to the extent of removing her third row turrets to add AA guns.
Her turrets and some secondary areas had armour upgrades but this slowed her down and the decision not to fit additional top deck armour was based on her speed degradation and stability issues.
Her Captain was fully aware of the shortcomings of the armoured deck and was turning away when she was struck by high angle long range shells from the Bismarck resulting in the catastrophic loss of a capital ship and so many poor souls.

I trust there are plenty of people working on some face saving measure to make Putin look like a big man to end this European war. Perhaps it needs to come via the Chinese.

It appears he is working on his own face-saving plan. Who would have thought, eh?

When Vladimir Putin announced the “liberation” of Mariupol, he was at pains to stress that the move was aimed at preserving “the life and health” of Russian soldiers.

The leader’s painfully staged conversation in the Kremlin with his defence minister, Sergei Shoigu, was his first public intervention in the war at this tactical level and, to some observers, it reflected ordinary Russians’ concerns about the conflict.

One sailor died and 27 more are missing after the Russian missile cruiser Moskva sank last week, while 396 other crew members were rescued, RIA news agency cited Russia's defence ministry as saying on Friday.

A Russian General announced plans to occupy the Transnistria region of Moldova on Friday.
Speaking at a defense industry meeting, Brigadier General Rustam Minnekayev, acting commander of Russia’s Central Military District, stated that the Russian Armed Forces plan to “make passage” into the region – in Moldova’s East, bordering Ukraine and less than 30 miles from the port city of Odessa – to create a “land corridor to Crimea,” Russian media reported. Such a corridor would also purport to connect the Russian mainland to Transnistria.

A land grab that would make Ukraine landlocked. Judging by Putin's success over the years in creating nation states within Georgia, Crimea and the Donbas, I can't see any UN, NATO or EU resolutions about their illegality stopping him.

Any country trying to intervene in the Ukraine war will face a "lightning-fast" response, Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned.

In a keynote speech in London, Ms Truss said victory for Ukraine was now a "strategic imperative" for the West.

This amounts to the clearest statement yet of Britain's war aims which have, until now, been limited to stating that President Putin's invasion of Ukraine "must fail and be seen to fail".
