In a keynote speech in London, Ms Truss said victory for Ukraine was now a "strategic imperative" for the West.

This amounts to the clearest statement yet of Britain's war aims which have, until now, been limited to stating that President Putin's invasion of Ukraine "must fail and be seen to fail".

Having said that, she's also aware that the UK premiership could be up for grabs sooner than later and well before Russia is defeated (if ever). Remember, she's been pictured riding in a tank in an earlier Thatcheresque photo op as well as striding purposefully off the half-million quid government airplane jaunt to some former colony.

No talk of Security Council expulsions but I do remember the French and Germans telling Blair and Bush that it was a bad idea and they would have no truck with it. Dominique de Villepin was quite vocal in his protests. He was right, of course.
