That seems quite low, as when i looked at Health insurance 10 years ago (age 60) I was quoted double that - with no health conditions. Care to say who you are insured with?sometimewoodworker wrote: ↑May 5, 2022, 10:44 am
Assuming that was Baht a premium of £9,000 pounds is excessive my insurance is £1,100

I like that method too if the operation is simple enough. I had a nodular basal cell carcinoma spot cut out while I was getting a skin cancer screening at Bumrungrad after a annual checkup a couple years back. She gave a choice of biopsy, lab, treatment/surgery or surgery, lab, report. I chose the latter and was done in time for a Bangkok dinner appointment and scheduled flight back to Udon the next day.papafarang wrote: ↑May 5, 2022, 4:51 pmBut got to go back Monday, seems at my age I will have to have my tonsils out, then a biopsy on them to see if clear. Kind of like the attitude of just cut it out and find out afterwards. Beats the system of let's do lots of expensive tests then remove them.
Fingers crossed PapaFarang. Positive thoughts. Let the Friday gang know if you need a lift out there.

Went doc Thursday, specialist by Monday. Imagine that in the NHS. One of the strange medications I have is xylocaine drops. Used a little last night, couldn't feel my mouth for a couple of hours . apparently use too much and a side effect is euphoria, instructions say in case of over dose sit down and chillPotamoi wrote: ↑May 6, 2022, 9:56 amI like that method too if the operation is simple enough. FWIW, last September in Lancaster, I had a referral on a Sunday afternoon and the operation the following Tuesday.

Actually, pre-pandemic did get a good result with NHS. Routine skin cancer check, problem found, referred to specialist and appointment in 5 days, saw specialist and operated on 2 hours later.....Went doc Thursday, specialist by Monday. Imagine that in the NHS.
Re: Do you have a Health Insurance?
How to protect yourself against the most expensive hospitalizations in Thailand.
"For 10 years specialized broker in health insurance in Thailand, I see far too many expatriates who have not taken the time to seriously consider the issue of health insurance and are “underinsured”. Being underinsured means that the medical coverage purchased is not sufficient to cover the highest hospital bills. But this is precisely the purpose of health insurance: to protect against the worst.
The choice of medical coverage mainly depends on the country's medical costs. In the USA, Kenya, France or Thailand, the potential hospital bill is not the same, and therefore the medical coverage to choose too. There are other factors but I will not discuss them in this article. I have mentioned them in other posts.
In Thailand, in short, we can say that the costs of outpatient treatments are not very high (but nevertheless of very good quality). However, hospitalization can be very expensive. It is therefore this danger against which we must protect ourselves in priority.
Below are some examples of recent actual Thailand private hospital bills:
-66-year-old woman, throat cancer, surgery and chemotherapy.
Total bill to date = THB 2,000,000
-55-year-old man, heart problem, heart operation, complications.
Total invoice to date THB 7,000,000
-45-year-old man, accident in Koh Tao, hospitalization, surgery, sepsis, emergency transport to Bangkok (cost of transport 1.5M THB), intensive care for one month.
Total bill = THB 10,000,000
-15-year-old teenager, lung cancer (congenital disease), one year of treatment.
Total bill = THB 10,000,000
-45-year-old woman: breast cancer, surgery and chemotherapy.
Total bill to date = THB 1,500,000
Generally, a cancer, including chemotherapy treatment, costs between 5 and 10 million THB. Rarely beyond 10M. Most cancers are diagnosed in people over 55.
Accordingly, for a person living in Thailand, here is what good health insurance should provide:
-Medical coverage at least greater than THB 10,000,000 per year, especially for those over 55 years old.
-Surgery, anesthesia, ICU covered at 100%. Be careful, most low-cost insurance policies have a strong cap on these items.
-Cancer covered at 100%, hospitalization and outpatient.
-Efficient direct-billing service and medical network: preference should be given to an insurer capable of quickly confirming that it will pay the hospital directly.
-Emergency medical transportation. Evacuation is essential because if you are not within ambulance distance of a hospital, the cost of emergency transport is very high, especially if the transport is "medicalized", i.e. say with a medical team and the first aid available on board the vehicle.
-Covered private room (because there is sometimes no choice…). A private room in the best hospitals costs THB 10,000 per night…
These are just the most important here. There are many other factors that go into the choice of insurance.

Holy shxt. Usually it would be less? No wonder the Thai government is concerned about farang not being able to pay their hospital bills. Even if the treatment was more limited and in a less expensive hospital.

Re: Do you have a Health Insurance?
Simple, no money no treatment. When I had a recent health issue, made worse by Bangkok Hospital, I had no insurance, and they would not do anything without cash upfront. Is that not the norm???
Re: Do you have a Health Insurance?
As I recall, not long after AEK opened, circa 1997, a few foreigners skipped out after having been treated and put into a recovery room. Back in those days, the hospital was left holding the bill. They started requiring partial upfront payment or a validated credit card before they'd admit. I've read of similar stories elsewhere. Seems like the norm is a reasonable solution to the problem.newtovillagelife wrote: ↑May 7, 2022, 4:03 pmSimple, no money no treatment. Re: Do you have a Health Insurance?
That was the "norm" for me. About 60% of the estimated overall charges up front, then on my last stay they came into my private suite every 2 to 3 days with an invoice to cover those days. I just did an electronic transfer via my phone, no hassles = easy AND I didn't think the charges were over the top.newtovillagelife wrote: ↑May 7, 2022, 4:03 pmSimple, no money no treatment. Re: Do you have a Health Insurance?
What about the many thousands of tourist who have serious accidents or medical events such as heart attacks every year? They don't leave them dying at the hospital door? I'd guess they stablize these patients while they try to sort out the baht angle
Do some of you guys try and keep proof of your health insurance on you when you are out and about?

I do the same, along with my wife's business card in Thai and EN and a couple of hospital HN cards where my records are established.
Thanks for the reminder to clean the crap out of that rag of a wallet of mine.
