Jake, if you've never lived outside the States (other than your military time) you need to consider what it is you plan to do when you 'retire' over here. You can't come here expecting to just 'get on with your life' because there may be no 'outlets' for you. What Nick has posted is all true but you may need more... what do you 'do' now for pleasure / recreation? What do you hope to do when you're here? I've seen too many guys go to a less expensive part of the world but don't have a serious plan of what to do with their lives. I lived in the Philippines for 20 years before moving here to Udon Thani and can't emphasize strongly enough how important it is to STAY BUSY. You probably don't or won't want to work, which is fine if you're coming to retire but, retirement leaves a lot of extra time on your hands that the average working 'Joe' isn't used to having. If you've got a hobby, great! Hopefully it's not hunting or fishing - very little of that here. But there are other outlets, if you're like cycling (bike or motorcycle) no problem, maybe you're into art or photography - those options are unlimited. Personally I play a lot of golf... not because I'm go at it but to keep busy. That's the important point. I've seen way to many guys come to the cheaper life-style and end up just drinking themselves to death because they are completely BORED and it is something that's affordable (worse in the Philippines than here). The thing I wish to stress is, plan ahead and try to keep busy. Hope to see you soon.

Of course, some will consider that girls are their hobby and they probably can't conceive that might get boring also!Hopefully they will have enough finances left when it happens to make another decision at that time

Maybe a better approach would be for you telll us what you are looking for and we can just tell you if it's available. It is what you make it, just like anywhere else you have lived before.
At the moment i would think twice about doing anyhtign beyond resenting a firished house. Lots of changes going on this little country at the moment, not to mention your money will not go as far as it did a few years years ago.
Me I have nothing to do and not enough time to get it done

For the information of Panick and some of the other forumites:
Jake may have a problem putting his intentions out in a public forum and therefore you haven't seen his responses BUT, I personally know he appears to be sincere based on the fact that he has PM'ed me and probably others who have taken the time to provide an answer to his original post.
Also, why question his motives?? He specifically asked about living in Udon. I know and understand that it's no business of mine if he does or does not want to live in Korat or be nearer to his wife's family.
