When the USA had political parties with some integrity, the president's nominations for the Supreme court had passed after review by Congress. That tradition has long since disappeared and the choices are now 100% political.

Mitch O'Connells refusal to even conduct congressional review for Obama's nominations being the most glaring abuse of process. The rushing through a Trump choice just prior to the 2020 Presidential election is a case of total hypocrisy. Not that the Dems have been much better.

This is not the process in most of the Western world, but is commonplace in authoritarian regimes like Russia, Myanmar, China etc. The fact that judicial choices in the USA are comparable to these undemocratic nations speaks volumes for the demise of proper and independent legal process in the USA.

I am stunned by the lack of understanding and analysis by some on this forum.

The "left", as you put it, won the Presidential election in 2012, and the person nominated by Obama to the Supreme Court was stymied by the "right", who had lost that election. That wasn't democracy working.

The same "left" won an election last year, and the "right" tried to overturn, by force, that result on January 6. That was the very antithesis of democracy.
