I'm just guessing, but if Thailand/China are doing joint air exercises, I don't see the US selling Thailand F35's anytime soon.

Were they in the frame for F35s or was it their aspiration?
Yeah, collecting lots of intel on how the RTAF works, the airfield, how efficient they are at turning 'round aircraft, engineering support, etc, etc.

coupld of days ago at 5PM saw a PLAF Xian Y-20, a C-17 clone in green camo take off heading east...

Actually there were 5 of those planes ,the first one had the Chinese flag but the rest didn't seem to have markings

Five? geez they're going big time to support this exercise.. All the maintenance squardron and ground support vehicles brought in I'd imagine.. I'm not sure how many the PLAAF have but I don't think it is over 30 right now..

Supposedly "Falcon Strike" has started, but haven't heard a peep all morning. Must be having a sleep in at Centara. J-10 are the planes of choice.

Their in-flight refueling route will take them well away to the northeast. If they take off at zero dark breakfast, they probably won't be back from Taiwan till around sohng thoom gwah no?

In a meeting yesterday to discuss reducing the noise from the airport:
The Royal Thai Air Force has sent planes for training, which are Saab JAS 39 Gripen fighter aircraft, number of 5 aircraft from Wing 7 Surat Thani, ALPHA JET attack aircraft (BorJor. 7) from the number of 23 Udon Thani and warning planes. And air control type SAAB 340 AEW & C number 1 aircraft, while the Chinese Air Force sent fighters to join, namely 6 Chengdu J-10 fighter jets, J-10C / S models, Xian JH-7A bomber fighters. 2 aircraft, 1 Shaanxi KJ-500 air warning and control aircraft

Crikey, those Alpha jets must have loads of hours on the airframes, they've been flying for years. I wonder if they were purchased second hand.
