Re: QUIZ TIME IN UDON
You got the important ones. 'Tai-pan' is a great novel. I'll wait a bit before providing answers and see if anyone else can come up the correct results. A clue about Yip Sih-man is that she has connexions to Taiwan, Victoria, Canada and George Lam.Earnest wrote: ↑November 7, 2022, 12:21 amLaan Yaa Mo wrote: ↑November 6, 2022, 11:08 pmHere are a few additional questions for Hong Kong:

Yes, it was rather good. I shall put up my answers later today.
Yes, I remember similar. I'm not sure what they've done with that runway since they moved the airport.

Re: QUIZ TIME IN UDON
About Emily Lau, she was the first Hong Kong politician who argued that Hong Kong should be independent from Britain and China. I heard her, and Martin Lee (democratic politician for Hong Kong) speak in Toronto. The exchange between Emily Lau and Margaret Thatcher is memorable: 'An Object Lesson from 1984
There are those who have waved the Union Jack during the 2019 Resistance Protests. Seeing that flag brings to mind the press conference [on the 21st of December 1984] that British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher held in Hong Kong after she had signed the ‘Sino-British Joint Declaration’ in Beijing.
抗爭中有人舉港英旗,讓我回想到1984年,英國首相戴卓爾夫人在北京簽署了《中英聯合聲明》之後,在香港召開記者會,當時還是記者的劉慧卿質問鐵娘子:
The reporter Emily Lau [Lau Wai-hing 劉慧卿, 1952-, who was then working for The Far Eastern Economic Review] asked the Iron Lady:
Lau: Prime Minister, on Wednesday, you signed an agreement with China promising to deliver over five million people into the hands of a Communist dictatorship. Is this morally defensible or is it really true that in international politics the highest form of morality is one’s own national interest?
你們將500多萬香港人交給獨裁的共產政權,在道義上是否說得通?
[Thatcher: Can I just say this to you? What do you think would have happened if we had not attempted to get an agreement? In 1997, 92% of the Territory would automatically have returned to China without any assurances, without any of the advantages of the Agreement that we have now.
[May I not put it to you that the situation now is vastly better for Hong Kong and accepts and honours and acknowledges the fact that China wishes the lifestyle of Hong Kong to continue under that Agreement?
[I think you would have had great cause to complain had the Government of Great Britain done nothing until 1997, and I believe that most of the people — indeed, the overwhelming number of people in Hong Kong — think the same. You may be the solitary exception.]
Today’s tragedy started with the question about ‘the highest form of morality’ that Lau posed back in December 1984.
悲劇是從這個道德議題開始的。

d) Yip Sih-man (Sally Yeh) was born in Taiwan and grew up in Victoria, British Columbia. She became a huge Canto-pop star singing in Cantonese, Mandarin and English. Sally was also in a number of Hong Kong movies the most notable probably being 'The Killer'. In this movie, she was a singer and girlfriend of Chow Yun-fat. In addition, she and George Lam (a famous singer in HK) fell in love while he was married. She and Lam eventually married and are still married today.

I lost my American Express card at Red Lips topless hostess bar in Kowloon.
Twice.
I also went on a bender with Alex "Hurricane" Higgins at Club Volvo, all on his tab. That was just after he became World Champion for the second time.

Re: QUIZ TIME IN UDON
During the negotiations for Britain to return Hong Kong to China, the Chinese living south of Boundary Road felt they were safe because the Treaty of Nanking ceded that land to Britain forever. Those who lived north of Boundary Road worried because Kowloon was only leased for 99 years. Prime Minister Thatcher announced that Britain kept their word on treaties; therefore, the land south of Boundary Road would stay British as per the terms of the Nanking Treaty. However....
