The problem with an amalgamation of the two nations is that New Zealand’s status would go from that of an independent nation to a state of a ‘new’ nation, that was really an enlarged Australia. It is unlikely that a majority of New Zealanders would find that acceptable. As time goes on the likelihood of such a thing happening becomes less not greater

We could amalgamate the existing countries into The Republic of Oceania. North and south Islands could become states along with NSW, Vic, Qld, Tassie, WA and SA. Kiwi states could join the Sheffield shield and learn how to play cricket. All blacks would cease to exist and Aussies could compete again. Aussies would get to drink Speights and Tui. We could abandon Canberra and Wellington and make Norfolk Island the capital. Match made in heaven.
