It's been amazing to see how long it took for the liberal Beeb to pick up on Uncle's friend. Took them a while but we finally have the long awaited (non) article.

Personally, I'm one of them ( :D ) who still sees "they" as a plural pronoun so am more offended from a grammatical viewpoint.

Reading earlier on how Zambia's prolific goal scoring CF and women's' team captain who plies her trade in the Spanish leagues, was banned by CAF from participating in last year's African Women's Cup of Nations due to those pesky higher than normal testosterone levels (same thing as SA runner Caster Semenya has to deal with). However, FIFA and the other governing bodies (of which CAF is a member), have a lower threshold on what constitutes blokeyness and she's leading the team in New Zealand. She hasn't managed to get any goals but reading the Japanese coach's comments after their 5-0 thumping of Zambia, they knew the danger she presented and played to cut off her feed of through balls.

And here I thought Samster was referring to me (Uncle) and the Canadian non-binary player, Quinn. I trust you enjoy being me for awhile. Just don't besmirch my identity by doing something rash. Have fun.

Despite a noisy pro-Irish crowd in Perth, the Canadian women fought back from an early Ireland goal to defeat the Emerald Isle, 2-1.

It seems the Canadians played scared in the first half; furthermore, Canada had the luck of the Irish for Canada's first tally was an own goal by Ireland allowing the soccer gals from Canada to tie things up.

Same as most other games. The "inferior" team defends from the half way line and the "superior" team tries to string 5 passes together in an attempt to break through. It's organisation and endeavour against talent (in the loosest sense of the word).

You'll have to whisper it to the powers that be in FIFA but, should, as looks distinctly possible, the Aussies and NZ get knocked out, the interest will wane dramatically.

As a football fan and, long time watcher of ladies football, it was much more interesting when the girls played for fun. The only fun I had last night was a game of "Quim or Quinn" as I took bets with my missus as to which of the players were the dominant dyke. No doubts about the Canadian manager or her number 5.

Blokes footie was also more interesting when they played for fun. Outwith the structures of the EPL, FA, FIFA et al, it still is.

As Milton never said, ""Others have forsaken Mammon in search of something a bit more fun."

Anyhoo, the Lionesses and Sepo's are still in it for now so the premature departure of the diminutive Antipodeans is a shame but it isn't very remarkable.

Apologies Uncle - my enquiry was not in relation to the whole team.

Dont agree. Football at the highest level is entertaining. Watching true world class players excites and is much more fun than watching a group of fat blokes hoofing it around in the local park. I'll be focusing on Championship football next year rather than the EPL and, whilst I'll enjoy that there's more of a level playing field, the entertainment level will be reduced.

The problem with womens football at the moment is that skill levels have increased but, not to the level where they are able to produce something extraordinary, either individually or through teamwork, as there will always be one loose pass or miscontrol. With that in mind, tactically, it's simple for the manager of, say, a Haiti or Phillipines to organise and stick 10 girls behind the ball and challenge the better side to break them down. They're largely incapable of doing that and, frankly, I dont see that changing in the near future.

Lots of 0-0 and 1-0 in the tournament back this up. Hopefully the competitive games will start soon but it will still only be the competitive element rather than the skill level that will excite. If you dont have skin in the game, the Beeb and ITV will be bitterly regretting their wall to wall coverage.

Watching the overpaid male professional drama queens does offer its moments of sheer and utter brilliance but the remaining 85 minutes or so can be, and often is, quite brain deadening. I do agree with your EPL versus Champions view though. Just wondering how long it will take until their reformatting of the structure results in the usual percolation of well-funded "always winners" versus the earnest and hardworking "always the bridesmaid" teams with more predictable quarters, semis and finals? The current Saudi-ization of many sports is detrimental to the fun of the game for starters but that horse bolted when they welcomed the sovereign wealth funds of other middle eastern potentates.

Considering that women's football has only been given media, sponsorship and financial boosts relatively recently, it's doing not too bad. Mistakes will be made as it grows but more so if they try and model it along the same lines as the blokes game. Early days yet and it won't change in the near future or in our lifetime. One growing concern is the higher-than-male incidence of ACL-related injuries in the comparatively lower-pressure women's game. There's a whole new chapter to be written about sport physiology and it goes way beyond having dark shorts for those inconvenient monthly events. For example women's boots are modeled on the male boot and there's already significant evidence that this "one (smaller) size fits all" doesn't quite cater for their physical differences.

FIFA's figures for the 2019 WWC estimated total (TV and digital platform) viewing was 1.12 billion. The forecast for the current tourney is closer to 2 billion. Probably the proverbial 'drop in the ocean' compared to the Men's World Cup (do your own research) but in between those numbers is somewhere close to the population of China. Gotta start somewhere, no?

The mens game and the division of wealth/success is a topic that is well past debate. Mens football has changed irrevocably and, as I've said before, I genuinely feel sorry for the hardened fans of City, Chelsea and, now Newcastle because they've lost their clubs forever.

I'm happy that I still have a club with passion and the ability to lose which makes the good times sweeter. I also come from a country who had more foresight than other nations and, produced systems which recognised and nurtured talent. From a footballing viewpoint, I can think of nothing better than being an English, Leeds United fan.

As for the women, what the powers that be are not allowed to recognise and, what the likes of Rapinoe, Aluko and their ilk refuse to accept, is that women are different to men physiologically and psychologically. You've mentioned the issue with ACL injuries but, the main issue for me is one of raw talent.

Quite simply they will never find a Messi, Xavi or a Foden. They will not produce a team like Brazil in 1970 or 1982 or Barcelona 10 years ago with 11 skilful components. That's because the women that are "good" at football at youth level are the larger more masculine females. Smaller, more feminine girls are, generally, not interested in playing football (or indeed, watching compared to males) and, if they are interested, they are bullied and physically intimidated by the majority. Female football cannot develop in the way the powers that be want it to.

It's a much wider societal subject but, until we stop bowing down to minority views, womens football is doomed to be a poor, less entertaining version of the Male game.

It's hard to contain the excitement evident on this forum about women's football. Tam of course has already written off the Oz team (perhaps a tad of provocation, No)? The simple fact is that if they beat Canada on Monday, they will move to the next round. If they don't, you really can blame the coach, his tactics have been abysmal.

In general womens football is gash and shouldnt really be taken seriously ... a womans place is in the home , cooking quiche baking sponge sconz n cakes , cleaning washing and ironing not pretending to be good at a game that is in reality a male sport ... the current WWC is even dafter allowing these twisted trans gender benders with meat n two veg to participate along side the standard split arse hair flickers.
Recently a male team played a female side and won 22 -0 without breaking a sweat .. i rest my case mlord.

I hear it was Scunthorpe United, in a confidence building, pre-season warm-up game - didn't want to risk a loss this close to kick-off.

The Aussie sheilas losing shouldn't come as a huge shock. Without Sam Kerr it is a pretty average outfit.
