Talking of which, what of Everton? Nobody was happy because they wanted owner Farhad Moshiri out, then he sold to 777 Partners, and now nobody’s happy again. Fans that marched to sack the board already seem unsure about the appointment of the new one. This is the problem facing vulnerable clubs. It’s one thing demanding “get out of our club” but what about who comes in? Ashley was considered a saviour once. Not everybody gets Sheikh Mansour, and even Manchester City’s owner has 115 problems stacking up beside all those trophies.

Everton haven’t even had their deal ratified by the Premier League – a process that could take months – before it is cast into shade. Depending on your source, there is a very real fear 777 could become 999 quite quickly, given Everton’s level of jeopardy and some lurid assertions about the new ownership’s business history. This is a takeover unfolding against a backdrop of allegations around fraud, unpaid debts and illegal loans. “We will defend our reputation vigorously by all legitimate means,” is the 777 statement. It is hardly a declaration of intent regarding a return to the glory days.

Yet who is out there that fits? Moshiri thought he, and his backers, had money to compete with the elite but spent it poorly and was eaten alive. Bill Kenwright who has devoted much of his life to a club he plainly loves, has ended up despised by a vocal group of Everton fans. At one point the club legend Graeme Sharp was warned off attending Goodison Park for his own safety, due to his association with the present regime. There are losses north of £400 million to absorb, a £500 million stadium under construction, a Premier League hearing into alleged spending breaches due next month with a points deduction or transfer ban both on the table, and a team that needs rebuilding and has taken one point from 15. Who buys into that level of financial risk?

Oman might be able to cope with it but Everton have probably exhausted enquiries for saviours among oil-rich states. That’s why they are stuck with 777 Partners and some troubling baggage. Everton fans were posting photographs at the weekend from another 777 club, Hertha Berlin, where the owners rival only Moshiri and Kenwright for popularity with the locals. Supporters of 777-owned Standard Liege, Genoa and Red Star of Paris all appear equally disillusioned. Yet Josh Wander, 777’s co-founder, was recently elected to the board of the European Clubs Association where he will sit beside representatives of Paris St Germain, Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Arsenal, Benfica and others – so not everyone has a problem with his stewardship.

The government – the real one, not the ECA – talks a good game on regulation but are too economically needy to rule out future state ownerships, and too in need of votes to make a judgment call that could prove unpopular with fans. They will talk up integrity tests, or proof of financial competence, but those maxims are already in place within the Premier League. And Everton still ended up where they are now. So we continue looking for our golden age of stewardship. The regulator might as well introduce a sanity clause. And as anyone who follows Everton knows, there certainly isn’t one of those.

'Calvert-Lewin will be vital for Everton staying up this year'

Former England and Liverpool striker Natasha Dowie believes goalscorer Dominic Calvert-Lewin will be "vital" for Everton this season - if he can stay fit.

Substitute Calvert-Lewin, who had scored just twice in 19 league games since May 2022 amid several injury setbacks, sealed three points for Sean Dyche's side by adding the third against Brentford.

With Everton having gone into the match winless, Dowie told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast it was a good time for the striker to get his goal.

"There's been a lot of pressure on them to get him back fit. It's great to see as a fellow striker because you like to see people fit and healthy, playing the game that they love. He's had a rough couple of years hasn't he, but touch wood he can stay fit," she said.
