While I am sure most people recognise that the Hamas actions were terrorist, it appears to me that a lot more people are now asking "why"?
I agree, in two respects. I think that people are asking both 1) what drove them to violence, and 2) why choose violence when it was sure to provoke a strong and deadly response from Israel.
As I commented earlier in this thread, both your question are probably answered by reference to the likely Palestinian (and by extension, Hamas) dissatisfaction with the status quo up till a few days ago.

The "why"I refer to is why Hamas has taken this particularly violent action, given the 2 likely outcomes you refer to.

Different people will draw different conclusions.
One conclusion that I drew years ago was that the Hamas leadership doesn't care about its people. It seems willing to sacrifice them in pursuit of its own goals.

People whose main source of information is social media almost deserve what they get. It's so hard to get reliable, accurate, and unbiased information these days. My two primary sources, for a while now, are Reuters and the BBC.

yes, Reuters, BBC and most other western media outlets whose "editorial style" rules mandate that Hamas terrorists be labelled "militants."

A Turkish analyst on AustralianBC last night suggested a reason for Iran's involvement and support of the timing of the Hamas attack is to slow down the peace process between Saudi Arabia and Israel. In other words, the Arab world might not look kindly on the Saudis if they are moving towards friendship with Israel at a time when Gaza is under attack thanks to Hamas, although supporters of the militant terrorists will point their finger at Israel as the guilty one in this tragedy.

"The claim: Saudi Arabia has ended 'all negotiations' to normalize diplomatic ties with Israel after Hamas attack"
"Our rating: False
There are no credible reports that Saudi Arabia has called off talks to normalize diplomatic ties with Israel. The post claims Saudi Arabia told Secretary of State Antony Blinken as much, but Blinken made no mention of it in multiple recent interviews. The post cites The Jerusalem Post, but there is no evidence the newspaper published such a report."

Have to admire the Israeli leaderships intestinal fortitude.
Give us back our people and you can have water, fuel, food etc.
Not many Western Governments would take such a hard line publicly. Good on you!

Hamas has a few hundred Israeli hostages while Israel has all the people, Palestinian and otherwise, in Gaza as their hostages. Both using the lives and wellbeing of the innocent as bargaining chips.

It's a shame the action of Hamas put the Gaza innocent in this position knowing full well how Israel might react to their terrorist attack inside Israel..

Over the years I have always thought that living in Israel must be stressful. They never know when the next suicide bomber, rocket, bomb or sniper will attack. With many Arab countries saying that Israel has no right to exist keeps this industrious small country always on edge. The big question is how the Jews have built such a great productive country when Arab countries are in poverty and fighting each other. Only Muslim countries who have huge oil deposits are prosperous. Does jealousy play a part of the hate? Can we blame the Jews for hating most Muslims?

Probably has something to with the almost $4 billion a year the get from the US to fund their military, and the guaranteed lowest possible interest rate they get from US banks to fund their economy.

Adjusting for inflation, the US has aided Israel with appropriately $260 billion between 1946-2023.

They sure haven’t done it on their own.

and on the flip side of the "aid" how much has the US given Egypt since the Camp David Accords??? Don't forget now that the Israelis are essentially energy independent with the oil/gas fields off their northwestern coast...

Approximately 1/3 of what is being provided to Israel. Makes you wonder, if Israel is essentially energy independent then why are they receiving so much military aid and able to get loans at dirt low interest rates from US banks?

To be brief they are JEWS and as such were the paymasters or transferers of money for centuries assisted in fundinmg the Napoleonic Waras for both sides `( The Rothschild family ) are known through out Europ[e as Financiers and the like, the Enormous Jewish Communities in the USA ensure funding is supplied to Israel, all my life I have never really seen a Poor Jew, there are some but they do not die from starvation of homelessness.

Its not just the US who gives support to Israel Here are some of the others UK, US, France, Germany and Italy

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/ ... -statement

As for Egypt
"UK extends support to Egypt in maintaining open Gaza border"
https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/other/uk ... r-AA1i6QP5

"17m US dollars

Canada provided aid to Egypt. Official development assistance (ODA) from Canada to Egypt is estimated 17m US dollars in 2010-2011. Aid has been targeted at micro-finance, helping private sector growth in small enterprises, funding for apprenticeships, training, and literacy."
https://search.yahoo.com/search;_ylt=Aw ... t-m-s&fp=1

Germany
Old figures but still its cash
"CAIRO – 18 August 2021: Egypt and Germany agreed on allocating soft development funds worth EUR 151.5 million from the German side to finance 15 development projects across sectors of technical education, vocational training, and innovation in the private sector, migration, labor, administrative reform, urban development, and renewable energy, according to Ministry of International Cooperation."

Independent in gas only at the moment. They still import a lot of coal apparently so they're not wholly energy independent yet but it is in their plans.

FWIW, the seismic survey vessel that was working offshore Israel last week has recovered their gear and is now berthed in Akrotiri, Cyprus.
