Get away from the inner city and the main roads and not much of an issue. Yes, looking up into the sky a bit yellow, but visibility good at ground level and you cannot 'taste' any pollution. A bit of wind a couple of hours ago and you can see sk.e stars. No burning around us (near Bobae).

I don't think I've ever seen it this bad.. N95 when outside, air cleaners chugging 24/7 in the house with the place buttoned up...https://aqicn.org/map/udon-thani/

Doing the same here. My home is small so I have one air purifier unit and I also bought a roll of pm2.5 filter material thats taped over my home air conditioner screens. Seems to work well.

This timely article just popped up on my newsfeed today:
Air Pollution May Be Increasing the Risk of Dementia, Study Says

It’s no secret that air pollution can contribute to a number of health conditions, including heart disease and respiratory conditions. Less widely known is that it could play a role in declining cognition as well.
In a study published in BMJ, researchers at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health provide what they call the “best estimate” of how much air pollution may be contributing to dementia risk. Analyzing more than 50 studies that tracked air pollutants and dementia cases, the scientists found that the risk of dementia increased by 4% for every 2 microgram/cubic meter increase of particulates in the air annually. When they focused on more rigorous studies that actively followed people by regularly testing them for dementia, instead of retrospectively mining their electronic health records, that risk increased to 17%-42%.

burning fires all over Laos and in northeastern Burma are the main culprits. Plus domestic burning here in Thailand although not as bad. https://firms.modaps.eosdis.nasa.gov/ma ... .7,17.8,7z

you'd think that village level burning would come to a complete halt but no.. Street sweepers and the park cleaners raking up leaves and pine needles and burning them. Pu-Yai Ban was out with a village team cleaning around the village meeting house raking weed wacking and burning the debris... People still buring trash.. Yes, small stuff compared to the forest burnings in Lao and Burma but geez, you'd think they'd wise up...

PM 2.5 levels should skyrocket this afternoon ........

Just spent the last hour dousing down the area of field next to my house and watching as the flames /smoke etc consumed the weeds/grass/trees all around. ........ not for the first time in this fallow field.
One of the other threads asks where the waters gone , well most of its now on the field thanks to local fire guys with tanker. Seems quiet now, but wary of how quickly it can reignite (previous experience).

Just had a great idea .....

With massive amounts of air pollution (20x World Health guidelines)why dont we get say about 250,000 cars to make journeys of about 500km each into the areas where the problems are at their worst. I mean an extra hundred plus million km of road use (in each direction) should really help the problem

Mrs Stats has been using her Thai logic again ........

The fire in the field next to our house got stopped by firstly me spending 30 mins soaking a grass area and then by fire brigade with high pressure canon, about 10 metres from our wall. Mrs Stats suggested getting someone from the village to come and cut down all the weeds/grass next to the wall for us in case it catches fire again. I had to point out that a load of cut down weeds/bushes/grass lying on the ground to be dried out by the sun was probably an even higher risk of catching fire than if they were still growing with at least a small amount of liquid/sap in them ....... hopefully the large area of already burned grass will act as a barrier to any fires coming from the same direction

just as the temps were dropping a bit and the cool season starting and I see the AQI peaking? WTH?? It never starts this early. Its usually in February that the air gets nasty.. https://aqicn.org/map/udon-thani/ :( :(

The NASA fire map doesn't show any significant blazes nearby.. So, just a week of dry and high pressure holding in auto pollution?

Air quality not to bad - as long as you are away from traffic routes. Just checked and between 33-50 AQI in suburban areas (3 measurements). Near major routes (e.g. Tungsri Muaeng, UDtown, ring road, 100 plus.

Oh dear we are going to have six months of people whinging and whining about AIR quality . Udon Thani is not as bad as BANGKOK OR Chiang Mai, or even other notable cities nearby , but geographically its location inside of a bowl will ensure it can be worse than outside the Ring Road. I said it last year and will say it again, do not like the AQI, move or put into place systems that will make your personal AIR clean and nice . Constantly moaning about it and wanting everyone else to comment is a pointless exercise .
That was why I brought my property on a hill and not in town. I thought.

No problem with air quality in Bkk ..YET as its still pissing down most days in the metropolis .. unlike Udon and wider Isan which seems to be transitioning into the cool dry season slap bang on time... not expecting anymore proper rain in Udon possibly an odd shower so expect the AQ to deteriorate especially when the illegal sugar burning cranks up.

Mentioning odd showers ... its Friday and CCW DAY

our property is outside the ring road and at least 600 meters from Route 22. As for "whinging" I'll whinge, piss and moan about it as much as I desire. Nope, not going to change it, but makes me feel a wee bit better. My lung function is such that avoiding high AQI is important. Our house buttons up tight and I've got three air cleaners that can handle 60 sq meters of house space apiece.. Yeah yeah, I could move, but nope that's not gonna happen, at least for the foreseeable future.. Perhaps my posting, to Thai forums too, might propel someone in authority to do a slam dunk on cane burning or other things that affect AQI. After all, the general population are the ones that suffer hugely as evidenced by the Thai Health Ministry's figures on respiratory issues in the Kingdom.

Crappy unhealthy AQ is not only in the cities ..i lived in rural Buriram and it was terrible , way worse than in and around Udon .. mostly down to farmers ignoring the sugar cane no burning law it was so bad you had to constantly sweeping up around the house , having to re wash clothes that were hung out n covered in black soot particles and for ever cleaning the swimming pool of the same sh8t..

As KP suggests i moved to Udon and never had to re wash a pair of my Marks n Spencer Y fronts ever again .. well not due to soot stains that is
