Two cases:
A neighbor lost the sight in one eye after somebody at AEK tried to treat a detached retina. His advice was to go back to you "home country" for anything concerning the eyes.
Your neighbour is also a mate of mine and i suspect the hospital botched the cataract op and then in true Thai style wouldnt admit the #uck up and told our mate he neaded lase surgery when that didnt work he was told he had a detached retina , end result zero vision in that eye plus nearly died on the table when they put him under , he has now gone to the states to see if any viusion can be restored, wouldnt touch AEK for anything other than minor surgerys .

Cataract surgery at AEK Udon
As a follow up to the topic, Saturday I went to the Doctor Sima Eye Clinic in Ubon Ratchathani and underwent cataract surgery and lens replacement. I was in the operating room for about twenty minutes and the ROUTINE procedure itself took about ten minutes. Today, Monday, I am seeing with perfect vision without glasses, but I will need reading glasses for fine print. I keep staring at the clouds, the sky, and the beautiful Thai landscape which I hadn't seen for a long while. Total cost was 23,000 baht, inclusive of all medicines, antibiotics, follow up treatment, etc.
I had this done on my other eye in the US several years ago and this was slightly advanced from that experience. They made a tiny incision which seals itself, so no need for stitches. Also no anesthetic is necessary as there was no pain whatsoever. In the US they gave me a shot in the eyelid to stabilize the eye, but here they just gave me some pills, Diamox to reduce the pressure in the eye. I didn't request a sedative but I would imagine some people would need a tranquilizer, as it is pretty frightening to realize that this guy is ripping open your eyeball and sucking out the inside. But it's all over before you know it.
A word about the selection of this clinic. We were referred there by some friends, including an ophthalmologist here in Amnat and a nurse in a local eye clinic who had sent her father to doctor Sima. I did some due diligence and looked him up, found that he is a Fellow of The Royal College of Ophthalmologists of Thailand, has presented papers all over the world. He is also a member of Rotary and has been active in their "Avoidable Blindness Task Force", which has performed over 400,000 cataract surgeries in developing countries, as well as eye exams, eyeglasses, etc. A pretty solid dude in my book, and certainly demonstrated that he knows what he is doing. And right here in Issan.
We stayed at a hotel in Ubon as we didn't want to drive all the way back home only to come back the next day. The next morning we noticed families sleeping in their car waiting for the clinic to open. The car had a Khon Khaen license plate, so his reputation has traveled.

Jimbo, is that both eyes? or 23,000 for each one?

Morti that was just for one eye. I had the other one done several years ago in the USA. My surgeon charges from 21,000 to 24,000 baht (for one eye) depending on the type of lens required. If that is truly 40,000 for two that's a good deal. I hope they are not going to do both at the same time, that's not a good idea. They recommend waiting at least a few weeks between surgeries. BTW I was not shopping around for lowest cost. I was more interested in the reputation of the surgeon. Good luck to your friend, I'm sure he will be well pleased with the results.

Four posts from 12 years ago where there's no reference to successful outcomes after eye surgery at AEK Udon. Then a brand new member, just joined today, posts something that sounds like it came from a session on ChatGPT.

But you missed the link at the bottom of his post - to an eye therapy business.
I suspect that if his post had come as an email, it would have gone straight to my Spam folder.

My partner had laser surgery at the main Udon hospital's eye clinic less than a year ago, very pleased with the results.

I'm sorry to say that I missed that, too. I tried the link, but the page didn't immediately appear to be an advertisement. I have now clicked through a few of the links there and see what I missed initially. The link has been removed, but the post remains. I see no problem with it absent the link. The linked page sounds like it's from a company that supplies hardware or software to assist in eye surgery.jackspratt wrote: ↑February 1, 2024, 9:20 amBut you missed the link at the bottom of his post - to an eye therapy business.

Yes, I would too, but despite your suspicions, you still clicked on an otherwise anonymous link from someone who probably doesn't really exist?jackspratt wrote: ↑February 1, 2024, 9:20 amBut you missed the link at the bottom of his post - to an eye therapy business.

To the contrary - I clicked on the link to confirm my suspicions, which I then elucidated.tamada wrote: ↑February 1, 2024, 11:03 amYes, I would too, but despite your suspicions, you still clicked on an otherwise anonymous link from someone who probably doesn't really exist?jackspratt wrote: ↑February 1, 2024, 9:20 amBut you missed the link at the bottom of his post - to an eye therapy business.
